Also i have one of those msi motherboards where thru the headphones jack i can actually hear the harddrive running as an interference along with other electrical noises. Is that because it has no soundcard and the sound is built into the board ? Actually with a dedicated sound card, when you play a wav file from harddisk does it output equal clarity to that of a cd player ? I dont want my new comp to have this problem.

The reason you hear hum is because the onboard sound card isn't grounded and you hear the interference. My brother runs an Audio production company and his suggestion is to buy an Firewire audio interface. he states that for the money of a really good sound card you could by a better firewire interface.

Glen, Thanks i get what you mean. But im surprised that a dual opteron shows only a little difference compared to a single CPU model. But like you say i think ill go for a single CPU model. But probably Dual Core. Which would you say is better AMD or INTEL ?

Silverwolf...thanks for taking the trouble but what exactly is a firewire audio card interface ? Its different from a normal firewire which is used to capture video. Or is this something external like an audio card that works thru the normal firewire plug ?

It's hard to say how much faster a dual CPU system is compared to a single CPU system, although it generally ranges between 0-95% faster. It really depends on what program you use. In Vegas, sometimes Vegas doesnt use all the available CPU cycles well so you don't get the FULL advantage of having two CPUs. It all still really depends though.

In terms of AMD versus Intel, it tends to go back and forth. It depends on pricing (which changes extremely quickly), technology, and which programs you run (some run faster on one processor than another). Intel's Core2 is probably a good bet right now though- it is clearly faster on the high end. In the low-middle end, AMD may be better bang/buck (although I haven't looked at this lately).

My input: a good desk.

Also, for preview monitor, you can just use a basic TV and hook it up using RCA cables. It doesnt look the best, but if you're watching the project on a 28" SD TV, I find it better to preview it on that.

Glen ....Core2 is very expensive till date. Dualcore seems to be cheaper.

A good desk ? Can you expand on that please PTO ?

A month ago, an AMD AM2 Dual Core system was the way to go, today it is unquestionably a Core 2 Dual rig. A *good* chip which is the E6600 runs at 2.4Ghz and 4Mb Cache. Pair this with 4Gb of RAM and I quite frankly think you've built a tremendously fast system by today's standards...

Jon

Couldn't agree more with that. NOT going core 2 dual these days would be insane for an editing system... even if you had to go with a lower end chip than the E6600.
