What is RAW?

But, from what I know, very few people can have access to RAW video formats, as most (if not all) prosumer cameras don't allow RAW format right? I mean, I have a Canon XH A1s and I wish I could get the RAW footage from the camera. I usually use Premiere to capture my footage. Anyone knows if there is a better way to get the best picture quality?

No low-cost camera has raw anything. The closest you can get is with a Red One, which stores a compressed file they call "RedRaw" but it's not actual raw data. It's raw data that's been compressed with the RedCode codec, which (as I understand it) is a modified version of JPEG2000.

Red was originally going to offer a true raw module, but at a cost of $6500 for the raw output, plus needing a full hard drive array to be able to record what was coming off the spigot, they decided not to pursue it.
