What is nesting and envelope, exactly?

Hi

I found myself confused by the tutorials so I came here in hope of getting some help.

I have a few scenes which I edited separately. What I need to do now is put them all in one timeline and create the actual film. When I tried to drag scene 2 into scene 1, it didn't really work. The video had grey squares all over it for some reason. Then I tried again, but this time there was no audio.
The scene worked perfectly in its own project file and timeline, but when I tried to combine it with another scene something always went wrong. I tried that with other scene and got the same result.

Then I saw the term "nesting", which, to my understanding, is exactly what I need to do, but according to the description in the tutorials, I did what needs to be done: I dragged one project into the timeline of another. So why isn't this working properly? How do you create a master project with all your scenes?

Also, as a side note, if I want to move a scene across the timeline, but as one big video footage, not dragging each shot separately. How does one do that? Is this what's called an "envelope"?

I use version 8.0.

Thank you.

The grey squares represent transparency -- you probably cropped your footage. This is not a problem.

If you got no audio, you probably dragged it over with a right-click instead of a left-click and chose to drop video only onto the timeline.

That's not an "enveloped." Best way is probably to enable ripple edits and then drag the left-most clip whichever way you need the group to go.

Nope, I used the left click. I just tried it again. The squares are gone but I have no audio. Other clips on the same timeline play audio perfectly well. So is the original file when not "nested".

Yes, I just drag it from the explorer window. One other weird thing it does is that althought it was edited in widescreen, when it settles into the new timeline it's suddenly surrounded by a huge black box...

Guys, does anyone have any suggestion how to solve this problem? It's really holding me back. I went through the entire Vegas tutorial, I tried re-building the audio peaks - didn't help. Again, when I try to create a master project and drag already edited scenes into it to splice them together, the audio track just disappears. I'm sure it's something small and stupid that I'm overlooking... I just don't know what it is. I mean, surely Vegas lets you string all your scenes together, doesn't it?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Reg the Black Boxing.

Thats probably because your current project settings is set to Non Widescreen ratios.

If that doesnt work. Select the clips (Nested Project Actually) Pan and crop button and when the interface opens. Right cick on the frame there and say match aspect ratio.

Also try on the left properties panel in pan and crop. There is an option to maintain aspect ratio + one more parameter relating to ascpect control. They have Yes/No options. Try both options while watching the preview screen. If one options sets it right...your in business.

Right Click on your preview window and say match device output aspect ratio.

Keep in mind sometimes vegas preview window while rendering output will show the preview of render as if its letter boxed on all sides. But in reality its full widescreen thats being rendered. Youll know this when you play the rendered file seperately.

Oh, well, I found a way. I open the file that I want to "nest" and just copy and paste it to the master project. No dragging and no nothin'. I don't know if it's the "right" way to do this (seems a little low-tech) but so far it seems to be working, since the copying and pasting transfers the audio along with the picture.
