What is my K?

Can somebody explain to me this 2K, 3K, 4K, 5K thing? According to Ted from Red, HD is just a delivery format but lacks the resolution. I understand that. However, I'm not on top of it. How many K's does HD resolution and/or XD CAM EX have? In other words what is my K? Can we have some explainations on these K issues?

K=kilo (from Latin = 1000)

So 2K is a resolution of 2000 pixels, 3K is 3000 pixels and so on.

"Full HDTV" is 1080 pixels so it would be 1.08K (that´s what the XD CAM EX is)

35MM film is in the neighborhood of 4k on the negative and around 2K in theater projection.

This is only a ruff explanation, there is much more to it. Wikipedia is a good starting point to get an overview, for more specific questions, ask us.

ex 1920x1080 is actually 1080p

2k, 2048 x height

4k, 4096 x height

actually these red 2k, and 4k are the ones lacking quality and color space.

check this out:

that should give you a good idea. then read this: aspect ratio

it's not a rule for sensors/displays, but this is how it goes:

1K = 1,024
2K = 2,048
3K = 3,072
4K = 4,096

but when you're dealing with RAM and HDD, it is the rule:

1 kilobytes = 1,024 bytes
2 kilobytes = 2,048 bytes, and so on.

of course, in decimal numbers (metric system) it's:

1 kilosomething = 1,000 something
1 kilogram = 1,000 grams.

so, full high definition is just a little under 2K (1920 vs 2048).

but this also doesn't take into account physical sensor size.
