I hear that if you strike a deal with a studio and they release your film on DVD, there's a complex formual on how they pay you. What is that formula generally speaking?

Every deal is different. But studios are not necessarily the ones who will release an indie DVD. Studios have their own distribution arms, but my guess is that most indie DVDs are released through smaller distribution companies.
No matter what the specifics of your deal, you will not get anything util the distributor recoups their costs. After that, the split can vary...if there even is one.
