Hi im new to this forum and i have a question. im saving up for a dvx and i need something to record the audio with rather then using the internal mic on the dvx. My main questions are:

1. what is DAT recording?
2. is DAT recording recorded onto a seperate tape from the video?

i basically want to know the best way to record on field audio without carrying around boom mics etc. hope you guys can help

1. Digital Audio Tape
2. YES, it is a separate recording system! you will still need Mics & recorders.
I suggest you do a search on the system on Sound Recording. Happy reading.

You DO know that the DVX100 has the ability to use external microphones...since it has 2 XLR inputs...right ?

yea i was just looking at alternate options and whether im better of recording with DAT then the xlr inputs. What do you mean by the DAT recorder still needs mics and 'recorders'? thanks for your help

Why exactly do you need an external recorder? The DVX is great at recording audio. Do you need the camera to be detached from the microphone? There are wireless options. Do you think the DVX CAN'T record clean audio? It is the best in audio of any prosumer camera. I've learned here and from other sources that DAT is a dying format and in its current form is unreliable. Everyone who needs a separate audio recorder are either using MiniDisc or getting Harddisk recorders (flash media or direct to laptop or harddrive). In any case you will still need a good way to get the microphone(s) hooked-up, either via a good mixer or hopefully the recorder has awesome components (mic-pre) or an M-Box type of interface (for laptops). You mentioned you don't want to have to carry around booms and other stuff, but with an external(separate) recorder you almost double your equipment. In which case you will need someone to be your sound person. The sound capture will be better because the microphone placement will be more accurate, if your boom operator is experienced.

Why do you need an external recorder?

Use the XLR inputs with decent (appropriate) microphones. DVX audio quality is superb. If you use a separate recorder such as a DAT - how did you plan to synchronise audio to video ???

From what i've heard so far, the dvx doesnt have a very good quality internal mic. i didnt really know much about the DAT format so i more or less just wanted your opinions. isnt recording with minidisk just as complicated to sync with, and you still need the mics? am i better off with the ag-mc100g or a good sennheiser sterio mic? thanks for helping

i refered about - miss spoke
the dat( hhb) is for sale - exellent working condition- twice best sound in israel cinema
