What is Bokeh?

Can someone explain what Bokeh is? I'm trying to decide on the stock Fuginon HD lens for the HPX500 or to go with the Letus B4 relay/Ultimate combo.

Is Bokeh something to consider?

Sure it is, but I would think that the thousands of dollars in price difference would be the main thing to consider.

depends on what youre shooting....

if youre a DOP only shooting narritive... Letus relay is good.

if youre doing corporate/news the fujinon is the way to go.

boke also means stupid. so make sure you be careful when you use that word in front of japanese people. haha

I have been evaluating the Letus B4 Compact and Pro with my Ultimate and HDX900. The bokeh with either relay lens and Ultimate and a Nikon 85mm at f1.2 is lovely. The relays have no chromatic aberration, are sharp edge to edge and are sharp overall with good contrast at f2.8. I have found that the B4 Pro with Ultimate and a 35mm SLR taking lens at f1.2, loses about one stop of light with the relay at f1.5 vs. my Fujinon HA18X7.6 at f1.8.

The 35mm adapter/relay setup is going to have a softer overall look and will be limiting in many situations vs. an HD ENG zoom lens. I don't think I would be willing to be without the HD ENG zoom lens, I'd want both, depending on the project requirements.

If you're comparing 35mm primes with adapter/relay to an HD ENG zoom, the former will not have the same light sensitivity, will not be able to zoom, there will be situation where the shallow DOF will be problematic unless you have enough light to stop down. Using SLR or Cine zooms on the end of an adapter/relay will make for a very large form factor and won't zoom smoothly. SLR zooms aren't made for live zooms, Cine zooms need motors.

If you want to use a high shutter speed, 35mm adapters aren't a good idea.
