What is an LUT

How do you know you want to edit/customize it when you don't know what it is in the first place? :)

BTW, I have no idea what a LUT is (I'm sure someone will provide an appropriately funny answer though).

LUT stands for Look Up Table. It is commonly used for viewing gamma encoded images to see them 'natively' on your computer screen.

What do you need to edit one for?

What they effectively do is allow you to convert one value to another - and quickly. For instance, using the example above by oil, there might be 3 tables of 256 values. One table for each of Red, Green and Blue. The values in the table might correspond to each of the 256 values in a RGB pixel but gamma corrected (Maybe all multiplied by 1.2 or something) so instead of taking each R,G,B component and miultiplying by 1.2, you simply look up the new, pre-calculated,value in the table. Of course for a simple multiply by 1.2 it's probably just as fast to multiply it these days.

Im pretty new to cinematograpgy and I was wondering if you could explain what viewing gamma encoded images 'natively" on the computer screen would mean. I dont understand where the value for RGB come or even the reason could multiply them in the example by 1.2, but Id really like to know, thanks.

thanks a lot that link was great, if you have any other useful links about anything within cinematography I'd love to see them!!
