What is a good monitor to use on location?

I did a search but didn't find too much. I was wondering if there was a good portable (5" to 10") CRT monitor that has S-Video input out there to buy for the DVX100? I would like to have one that I can look at the picture to see what I'm getting. I won't be doing 16:9 because the finished product will be put to DVD and shown on 4:3 television sets. I am doing 24P though. I have experimented with my home Sony 32" XBR2 tv by that is a little too big to carry around. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks.

I love the size and the light weight, but are LCD's accurate enough to do color adjustments for your take? I have always heard that CRT's still have the best color.

Re: What is a good monitor to use on location?

I'm no expert, but LCD's are generally sharper than CRT's of the same size. I don't know about professional video monitors, maybe not.

You have to decide what your goal is: If you want something that's good for shooting and focusing, the LCD is fine, but if you need the most accurate color, then you'd probably want the CRT.

I'm just going to get a nice video monitor for my desk and when I'm out filming and I really need to see my colors on a monitor, I'll just plug it into a power inverter hooked up to my car... just long enough to adjust the cameras and then shut it off and use the built in LCD (or an LCD on the stabilizer).

I actually just bought a 7" LCD with 2400x480 resolution.. the highest I have seen, at least double the vertical resolution then most others. I will report back with the results, as I should get it in a couple days.

As far as computer monitors go, Tony_H is right on the money -- I have a cheapo 14" desktop LCD from Best Buy ($100) and it's significantly sharper than the 19" CRT I have next to it.

As far as for video monitors I haven't seen one yet that can hold a birthday-cake candle to a decent CRT. Those little 7" portables that cost $150 or so are not in the same league as the CRT's yet.

Re: What is a good monitor to use on location?

Jarred, what's the make and connect for that monitor. I bought a 1480 (H) 236 (V) for $200. It's ok but not good enought.

Re: What is a good monitor to use on location?

I dont know the make.. its for computers.. not one of those car DVD ones, but it has a VGA RGB16 cable and a RCA video cable input, so it can take video signals, and it also has 16x9 switching. The orignal purpouse of the monitor is for a car GPS/computer, so it should have enough resolution. as long as it has 800x480 thats good enough for me.

Re: What is a good monitor to use on location?

Jarred you mean that you trust it on the shoot to control focusing and light/color ?

if it is so i would LOVE to have the references !

Re: What is a good monitor to use on location?

Im not saying anything yet.. it hasnt come and I havent used it yet. I will let you know.

Re: What is a good monitor to use on location?

Jarred has inspired me ( once again!!!) to go out and find the elusive. This link goes to monitors that are 800 X 480 7". Information is missing for example are they 16.9 - 4.3 switchable, color correctable w/ Black balance, and who makes the tiff? The one I have is sharp and is 16.9 - 4.3 switchable but 1440 - 234 - that's the *****.

And Boo.. that one only has 240 lines of resoultion.

Re: What is a good monitor to use on location?

thanks jarred...let us know when you test out the monitor. i'm due for a new 16:9/4:3 switchable. the one i currently have is only 4:3.

If you're looking for a low rez camera mountable 16:9 LCD, maybe you should look at this one.

Re: What is a good monitor to use on location?

Can anyone recommend a battery powered crt video monitor with around 500 vertical lines?

The Ikegami T10 is a great monitor. We use it because it has gold mounts.

Almost no portable field monitors with glass NTSC CRT will have 500 vertical. Top of the line 2 grand monitors only have 400-450.

Re: What is a good monitor to use on location?

Not bad, thanks for pointing that out... somehow I missed that when I was looking at field monitors
