What is a 'dynamic' mic?

Alright, who's gonna post that 'noob' kid photo? Anyways...

I'm looking to buy the ew100 G2 system here http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/produ...ser_EW100ENGG2_C_Evolution_G2_100_Series.html that uses this dohickey SKP100G2 plug-in transmitter thing to use 3 pin xlr mics wirelessly.

I have and oktava mk012a and a Sony shotgun (think it was ecm674 or something) and was wondering if they could be used no probs with it?

I have to go straight to the camera as I don't have a mixer so this situation makes my steadicam useless with audio.

Condensor mics requires some form of electrical power to operate, supplied either through an external powering arrangement from the device it's plugged in to, most commonly these days phantom power, or through an internal battery in the mic itself. Dynamic mics, OTOH, convert sound to signal by moving a coil in a magnet to generate electricity and don't need any other souce of power.

The SKP100 tranmitter does not supply phantom power. That means it has to be used with either a dynamic mic that doesn't need power or a condensor mic that is powered by its own internal battery. That rules out using it with the Oktava mic. If your Sony IS the ECM674, that mic has battery powering so you could use the two of them together. Or you could upgrade the transmitter to the Sennheiser SKP500 which will work with the same receivers and DOES provide phantom power for mics that need it.

Thanks very much Steve, very clear explanation. B&H have the 500 kit for $1090 http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/388401-REG/Sennheiser_EW500ENGG2_B_500_G2_Series_Wireless.html so that might be the way to go for me. Can't wait to cut my cameras umbilical cord and be free.

My sony mic does have batter too.

Any thoughts on the 500 kit? Do you know any other big differences between it and the 100kit? Is the ME2 lav really useless? I'm looking to make a road movie so I'll step up the mic anyway I spose.

One last NOOB question, how does the system plug into my XLR camera (hvx200) input? I don't really get it.

The 500 series has more frequency presets and a bit better specs in general. The 500 and 100 are compatible with each other, though, so you can 'mix-and-match' and use a 500 series transmitter with a 100 series receiver (or vice versa) if a full 500 setup strains the budget. That means you could get the full 500 kit you linked to or you could save a little money with a basic 100 series bodypack transmitter & receiver kit without the 100 plugon plus buy a 500 series plugon transmitter separately if you really need the phantom power.

The receiver has a mini output jack and the kit comes with two receiver to camera cables - one is mini to mini and the other is mini to XLR. The receiver is at the camera, of course, and you use the 2nd cable mentioned to connect its audio output to one of your XLR inputs. Set levels and you're in business.

I don't know that the ME-2 is a crap mic but it's true there are others that people like better from Tram, Sanken, Sonotrim, Countryman, DPA, etc. There's a lot to choose from. Most of the top vendors sell lavs wired to mate with the Sennheiser transmitter so you can always upgrade with other mics later if you find the stock mic isn't doing the job for you.

Again thanks a lot. I've just downloaded some pdfs off the sennheiser site so will look into it more.

I do want to add that while wireless systems give motional freedom, what you also get is dimished quality. You have to set the audio levels twice, that means two possibilities to screw up, and G2 transmitters have level adjustments only in steps of 10 dB. They also compress/expand the signal at 2:1 ratio, not without side effects. Also there are the RF gremlins like transformers, fluorescent tubes etc etc...

For that reason I try AVOID using wireless as much as I can, even running 100 feet of cable underwater for a fly fishing video...

G2 mic is not as good as some others, but it works.

Not trying to spoil your enthusiasm...

really , i just finished a feature where i cursed every moment i had to go wire :-), ok i have better tools then g-2

Oleg is there something better than the g2 500 kit that's not too much dearer?

And thanks for the thought Petrus, I'm wanting to know a bit about it before I make the plunge.

used lectro 200 series reciever ( ucr-201 or 210 ,211 as you need something that can work on batteries ) with uh 400( i dont remeber if the uh 200c hade 48 ph ) or use phantom box in the midle and use regullar um 200 tx
used audio 2000 non divercity with phantom adaptor ( spesial barrel wich convert the 9v battery inside tx to 48 ph)
if you can find neuman 48 ph power suply handle , you can hoook it as ahandle to your suspention , very rear - check the uk ebay , i sow one
also denekey used to make power suply wich was sitting inside the bottom of the boom ( they made it for k-tek , try to find out if it still exist )
