What is a doubler/lens questions, etc :)

I am looking for a telephoto lens to use at the Nature Center/Zoo and on hikes, etc. The Canon lens that covers everything I want is around $600.

There is a doubler on ebay for like $50 and one that does 3X of my stock lens for $75 with shipping. http://cgi.ebay.com/3X-Tele-Lens-Fi...844QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem?hash=item250066807676

One of my friends used a 2X lens on her camera before she got her nice telephoto lens. She had been concerned about the lack of stabilizer on this lens (what I had been looking at) and thinks that the 3X looks fairly cool.

What is the difference? The doubler "looks" like a good deal, but I didn't see it on B&H. I was holding a screaming toddler at the time, so maybe I missed it. I have some money set aside, but I was hoping to spend most of it on a fish tank :D .

If both are horrible, What about something like this? It leaves a gap in between my stock lens, but is higher up. I could see if the local photo shop has something like this used or take a chance with ebay.

Thanks if you've made it through my email. I wrote it with my son being very fussy. Thanks in advance if you have any thoughts on the topic :) .

Oh, and I am looking at this remote instead of a corded clicker. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=cart&A=details&Q=&sku=116234&is=REG (Canon RC-5 Wireless Remote Control ) . I have two children and take a lot of pictures of children, 2 ft of cord can be limiting at times :) .

I've decided on the Crumpler 5 m bag for my XTi, btw, I think.

Thanks again.

Sorry, but all that stuff is junk--you might as well hot glue a coke bottle to your dSLR. You're way better off sticking with a lower priced Canon zoom telephoto than wasting your money on absolute junk that will leave you in exactly the same spot--needing a decent telephoto--only $75 (or whatever) poorer. I'm not familar with the Canon line, but go on photo.net and ask for some recommendations to find out the real scoop. BTW, I just got the Crumpler 6 Million Dollar Home and it rocks, so you should like the 5.

Coke bottle, eh? I wonder how well that would magnify... just kidding.

I find the honesty here refreshing from mostly dealing with hormonal pregnant women, as I moderate on a baby board. I'll look around photo.net ;) and get a decent lens to share with my husband.

Thanks!

The attachments you fix in front of the lens are crap. With our cheap video cameras (like DVX100...) we have to live with it, as the lenses are not interchancable. They always degade the picture quality, but sometimes having a longer tele is more important (and usually they are better than "digital zooms").

Proper tele-extenders are placed between the telephoto lens and the camera body. They come in two flavors, 1.4x and 2x. The downside with these is that they never improve the image quality either (1.4x is good) and that they make the combination one or two f-stops slower. Thus a f4 300mm turns into a 5.6 450mm or a f8 600mm (which is too slow for almost anyhing fast and the autofocus ceases to work). 2x extender is usable only with really fast 2.8 telephotos, pro stuff.
