What happens when you don't hire good people....

As someone who has made over two hundred music videos, I think I'm well placed to judge both the content and execution. Both are horrific. The fact that it's been made by two experienced professionals makes it worse, even contemptible, but quite funny too in a scary kind of way.

That's not my point. My point is everyone trumpets that you can shoot with an iPhone and that, as long as your content is good, then it doesn't matter.

Someone, somewhere probably thinks this content is good. So why are you all dumping on it?

I shot a job on an iPhone earlier this year. It does matter. It matters a lot, at least to me...

Content is only king when it is good content. Just because some tone deaf numpty thinks it's good doesn't in itself make it so.

As a home video... better than almost any... as something inthebusinesspros would want to have out in public... you've got to be kidding me...

if you randomly hit youtube with a stick, chances are you get better quality.

i was not going to look at the video but after 2 pages of comments, got curious, i thought it would not be as bad as some have painted it to be. it was much worse.

Ah, I get it. You guys don't like OLN or JT so you're crapping on them. I think this whole thread shows how petty many people are.

Then what does make it so? What is your criteria for telling someone "What you like is crap" vs. "What you like is good"?

No. You are wrong. I've always liked both of them. That's a bit of a straw man argument you've constructed there - not cool. It's their work that everyone is laughing at and the fact that they are still trying to wring a few bucks from the public thirty five years after their performance in Grease.

It's all subjective. But some peoples' subjectivity is significantly better than others. That's why we have directors...

I wasn't referring to you specifically. Other's have called them names. To me that's not people making fun of their work-- they're making fun of them.

i only did two videos and I think it rocks. It's soooo cute. I put it on facebook to show my friends

Good work Travolta! Rockin!

You don't know if he's close and personal friends with anyone who actually knows how to use a camera, and he may not have wanted to put out money for a legitimate production.
That's pretty much exactly what the story was. Read an interview with the director -- she is something like a wedding photographer that was a friend of his; they met and bonded when John lost his son and she'd lost hers. ONJ and JT did a song, and they decided that they needed something more, so they called up this photographer and said "what can you do for us?" She'd never directed or made any videos before. They gave her a budget of $9,000, which came out of their wallets. This was not sponsored by a record label or anything. They shot it at his house. They made up the concept in like 4 hours, had no script, etc.

See, now I feel bad. I read on Google it was a $12,000 budget and the song was made for a new Album. Turns out its a charity video:

It's still terrible, but at least it's for a good cause.

And it was a rush job because they had to have it finished for iTunes by a certain date so that it could be promoted as a holiday thing.

Note: none of this is to "defend" the "quality" of the video, but it does pretty much explain everything, doesn't it?

Only the part about them hiring a friend to make it. There are lots of great videos that have been done for no money in zero time. Plus, some of the most creative work is often done for charities, so that's not an excuse either.

The copyright is kind of interesting:

Music video by John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John performing I Think You Might Like It. (C) 2012 Constellation/ONJ Christmas Album Joint Venture, a joint venture comprised of Constellation Productions, Inc. and ONJ Productions, Ltd. under exclusive license to Universal Music Enterprises, a Division of UMG Recordings, Inc.

Doesn't mean anything other than Unviersal might help promote it.

Again, just because you don't like it, doesn't mean someone else won't.

It's about "content" after all...right? Riiiiiiiiiiiiiiight?

It means that the budget didn't come out of someone's wallet.

I answered this earlier. But just to add, even if I liked it, it would still be an ill-conceived, poorly executed, amateurish production.

Oh imagine what people would say if it had been a video with two complete unknowns...

Look... I watched "Xanadu"(1980) all the way through without skipping... If I can watch that, I can judge this... "Xanadu" is better...

And as a matter of fact I've liked a number of John Travolta's films... As for Olivia Newton-John... I don't like pop music and singing all that much so, it is not a matter of specifically targeting her.

But I think with the resources of a person who flies their own jet... Travolta could have gotten a better film... (I don't know what ONJ's financial status is, but I don't think she's destitute...).

If it was a 'happy shot video' to be passed around to friends, and only 'leaked' to the public... well... fine...

Then again, I think Gotye's single has long passed its self life, and now probably rocketing him into "Starland Vocal Band" one hit wonder heaven.

Maybe that's why the Wife has scrupulously avoided making videos... somewhere in the back of her mind she may have thought her 'moving pictures' would fall flat... I did support an effort to get the Wife into videos in the 80's by selling my 4x5 to buy a video camera... but other than 'home movies' of the Kid in highschool band and a few other family events, not much was done with the camera...

It IS about content I think. This (http://www.dvxuser.com/V6/showthrea...m-tape&p=1986246353&viewfull=1#post1986246353) may not be your cup of tea, but even with 20 year old equipment, it's the content that matters.

Actually, I tried posting my little modified version on Youtube and UMG blocked it instantly. Go figure..... So much for the parody fair use exception. And it isn't like I was trying to make any money. If anything, allowing parodies only helps to increase attention (not that they need it for this video).
