What Happened To The Site?

Agree with what you said but like many things, two sides to it. There is a back story you haven't heard. PM me and I'll tell you about it. I'm going to respect Barry's and John's privacy by not posting it.

Its fun here and nice to be social.

But to me the real reason of a forum is to find geeks with solutions.

Is the R62 rolling shutter better than the R6 rolling shutter

does my Osmo have pre roll - or dash cam mode?

Can I assign AF-MF to a user button on my canon camera.

Can I buy a standalone recording shotgun for interviews?

(dont answer these questions!)

RIght now this site doesnt have enough geeks with thier knowledge corners.

(equally FB and youtube dont help me find answers to my corner questions as they are influencered out)

So .. i dont know!

There was a time, like when we didn't understand log, or raw, or EI, but any more it's just opinions about how much better is prores than xavc, ettr stuff most of us made up our minds about already.

those were yesterdays questions. the forum helped deliver answers.

today we/I have new questions.

Ive just been dinking with OBS studio for a project and struggling

But it it seems that here there might not be an OBS studio expert here willing to chime in.

OBS, Zoom, Teams, Sidus link app..

Loads of things I need help with.

But all of that stuff is pretty straightforward...no YouTube or manual guide?

Might get trickier when adding a handful of hardware to the equation, but what are the questions?

My questions have been asked here over time.

One questioon I can remember is that I cannot check my own audio lelvels on a Teams call (as for the consumer it is natural not to want to hear yourself as a 'pro' is is natural you check the levels before you pop the CEO onto a chat with his 500 employees)

Youtube is tricky.

For example interested in a self powered and recording shotgun mic to use when there is noise around (show hall, market square) but all the YT tests I see are folk recording the ambient, birds bees and cars or chatting in a noise proof studio.

I can find no IV+birds bees and cars. i would imagine every member here has done interviews on noisy show floors or road sides and could easily comment about thier personal setup.

try this search.. Zoom F1=shotgun

https://www.google.com/search?client...oom+f1+shotgun

every film is done in the quiet (something I wont be able to do)

every film is done with the mic atop a DSLR (something I would never do)

no film notes if I will break it ater 30mins by putting it in my bag with some salmon pie. (something I try not to do.. but happens)

In Google Meet (not Teams), I had the camera set up into OBS and chose OBS as an option in Meet and then used OBS to see and adjust the audio levels (as well as add filters, color grade, and flip the image at times).

The last I used Meet/Teams (a while ago) you couldn't see exact levels outside of the settings area if you were just using Meet or Teams, but also why would you?

These are simple applications that are meant to be simple and automated for corporate folk, including any noise cancellation that so many people use which will work much better than any non dynamic microphone in a loud environment. (Yeah, you'll still hear some of that weird artifact noise but the cancellation keeps getting better and better and you hear the voice more clearly and less background which is the main purpose.)

I worked at many show floors in Manhattan in the biggest arenas with the most people and you use dynamic microphones because it's the only thing that works like it's supposed to.

Seriously, and there's no way you don't know this (I expect that you would)...even a $99 dynamic mic 1" away from a mouth will work better than most non highly-specialized shotgun mics and lavs in ultra noisy places.

These are just example questions that working cam ops on this forum will know and you tube may not.

Clearly you have some valuable experience and comments... proving my point

But I think you have me crossed.. Im not looking to use a zoom H1 in a corporate zoom call.

Id want to mic a zoom call like a 'pro' interview and be able to monitor my sound.

The H1+shotgun is an idea for ultra dirty run and gun :)

And that is I guess the value of the forum?

Its a chat box mainly for mid range professionals?

Sure we look up at Papert and enjoy tales of Alexa multicam.

But our world is usually $8g Sonies, and corporate interviews with the problems (and solutions) that delivers.

The Zoom H1 was another thread started by someone else...how'd you get that into this conversation? lol

But, yeah, def, good ole forums, gotta be around.

Its just an example of something Id like some user feedback from and YT has not helped me like a commercial cam op could :)

You said Zoom meeting and then he appended H1 on to it and starts talking about the recorder. lol. As tempting as it might be, this is why you shouldn't answer someone question they should be able to answer for themselves by doing a little research.

I talked about two of my questions that I cannot easily answer on YT.

1) Audio Monitoring of Teams when using a good studio setup

2) The sound rejection of a zoom F1/shotgun when used in a run n gun environment. *
2a) the physical robustness of H1n and shotgun

Other posters may have mungled these together.

If you can answer these questions with 'a little research' well you might as well leave the forum because it all online for you.

Personally I value the voices of those here who make a living doing this game and chip in when they have real experience of a situation.

*f1 edit from h1 - sorry.

I had to go back and check if I did use the word 'Zoom' before once above (after the fact) but I actually didn't write it in this thread...it came from him.

I've answered over a million by now (okay, a couple of thousand); it's what I've always loved to do here.

He answered your question. Use OBS to record any remote meeting and use dynamic instead of a condenser mic for loud environments. This also is off topic and shouldn't be in this thread so you lose 50 points.

I was not asking the questions.

I was discussing the relevance of this site in 2024.

I was using these questions as examples of questions that one can get answered here and not easily in other places.

If I want the answers Ill post in the appropriate areas :)

The landscape of video forums in 2024 is pretty sparse, and only seems to be slowing:

RedUser - This seems to be the most active of the forums, but the Facebook group is catching up. I own two Reds but I am rarely on there.

Cinematography.com - Want to know the best place to re-cell the batteries of Aaton XTR, or the most worthwhile of the pre-1990s Angenieux zooms? Last I checked, it's all still happening on this forum.

DVinfo - Not much of a pulse these days. I go there when I'm going down a rabbit hole about the best way to get a 4:2:2 10-bit signal out of the Canon XL-H1 (I don't own one but it's a thought exercise). And other than DVX, it's the only place that that info might even exist anymore. But that's about it.

EOSHD - Like DVX, there are probably still about a dozen active posters. Most are hobbyists, which I appreciate. It's nice to be around those who are doing this only for enjoyment, and who have a lot of energy to experiment. There are interesting threads on how to accomplish a S16 look digitally, the smallest possible camera/lens combo that can capture 4K, and using legacy camera systems to achieve a certain look. Which I dig.

CreativeCow - I haven't checked in years but surprisingly, it seems to have about as much activity as this site.

As others have pointed out, there's a lot more info posted in dedicated FB groups and YouTube. I have Facebook memberships with groups for every camera that I care about, and then some. And in general, technology is a lot easier to integrate than it used to be, with a lot less jerry rigging and therefore fewer points of failure.

DVX is the only site I've ever been on when a join date in 2012 doesn't make me one of the old timers. ; )

I don't comment every day or even every week but usually check at least daily. There aren't enough of us on here anymore to be an ongoing technical resource on current cameras, lighting, or other gear more recent than, say, 2018. I keep showing up here because this profession can be pretty siloed and even lonely at times. Without DVX, I'm having a conversation of substance with another video professional maybe once every two or three months. And I'm talking to someone who has been doing this for longer and at a much higher level than me once or twice a year. So it's nice to at least have at least some folks that I am familiar with to check in with and sometimes even learn from. My favorite topics are the broader ones, like where the industry is going and what to do about it, or where we dissect a new trend.

Sometimes I think that it would be fun to have virtual DVX happy hour, but I think that also goes against the nature of forums. Though if any of you are ever in my neck of the woods, hit me up and I'll buy you a drink.

For OBS - --> https://obsproject.com/forum/

For sidus check Reddit, Stack Exchange, you can read the reviews and comments at the app stores, Facebook, X (the app formerly known as Twitter - Lol).

It's going to help you to know a thing or two about an object C compliler, github. It's fairly obvious you despise BMD but there are active discussions, support help for an entire ecosystem of switcher, hubs, cloud collaborations, livestream, webcam etc.

But if you want solid answers to burning questions like why you should always ETTR or never ETTR, or expose SLog3 by a stop over, there's a home for you right here.

I think 'we' nailed exposing Slog after the fs7, before that 'we' were considering a 5d, letus or steadicam merln, we then learned about small gimbals.

'We' are on similar paths and that is what brings 'us' together

'We' will have new challenges .. live hookups via teams, making sets whos colour shift.. clients are pushing the latest and greatest on 'us' all the time.

Who is we/us? kinda midlevel folk who maybe had a dvx and do corporate work that we try and deliver looking and sounding modern.

I say when I have a client that wants an upright export or a slowly pulsing purple background.. you will have one next week.. or last week.. so come here an weeks chat about this weeks challenge ?
