You may want to check out the FAQ over at HD for Indies.
Mike Curtis over there put together a lot of good information about what is required for certain HD formats, and what is possible with each Mac model:
I would guess (and this is just a guess) that you would be fine doing edits in 720p, but you probably won't get realtime effects at full resolution. *Maybe* some of the faster filters will work in real-time, but you won't be pulling keys and color correcting at 720p / 60 fps, I'd bet on that.
Don't forget that you also have FCP's "offline" editing at your disposal. This may become more significant with HD resolution video for those of us without specialized hardware and big, fast disk arrays. (Read the FCP manual for more info.)
Anyway, I wouldn't fret too much. When both the HVX and FCP5 hit the streets, you'll have your answer for sure. Until then, you can't have them anyway, so ... maybe you should just wait and see.
Faster is always better, but a 1.8 dualie is a capable machine. You may want more RAM...
The biggest deal with 'real-time HD' is the disk requirements. I saw Apple demo-ing real-time 720p playback with graphics and transitions (on an awesome 2k projector) and they were good enough to admit that the video was residing on a pair of XServe RAIDs that were pushing 120 MB/sec sustained...
