What format should I export to (in my case)?

I need to export some home video footage for friends of my father. They are pensioners with minimum of PC knowledge, so I need to export it to a format they can play without a problem on their computers (rather small files without need of installation of any codecs). Whats the best choice? I was thinking about wmv....

Well, if they're anything like my father's friends, they have computers ranging from the late '90s to today, so if you want the best chance of them being able to play it as-is, yes, I'd go with WMV.

There is only a "Windows Media Video V11" choice in my Sony Vegas. Does it mean that people who want to play it need at least Windows Media Player 11 for it?

No. They should be able to play it, and if they can't, their version of WMP should update automatically.

You could also try MPEG-2 or MPEG-1, which anything in the last 10 years should be able to play, but it'll be a bigger file size and you might not be able to get the same quality.

Beyond that, if their computer is so out of date that they can't play even these things, I don't think there's anything you can output which will do what you want.
