i just got handed a project to edit. it was shot on 35mm and telecined to 1080p hdcam. they gave it to me on a drive as uncompressed 1920x1080 quicktime.

this is not an offline edit. the product i give them will be the final and eventually downrezzed to sd for tv.

i need to convert this to some sort of compression for editing. i can't work with uncompressed. it won't even play back on my system. so my question is, which compression is best? i am used to working with dvcpro hd. should i go with that or pro res 422 or what? i'm sure the final output will be sd digibeta. and i am working on the latest mac pro 8 core with a ton of ram.

i just haven't had any hd experience outside of dvcpro hd (hvx) so any insight is much appreciated.

ProRes all the way. Just as easy to edit as DVCPRO HD but better quality and higher resolution in HD. Use the HQ mode (245 mbs 10bit codec) if quality is super critical.

thanks. comparing dvcpro hd to pro res hq, are file sizes similar? will i be able to play multiple streams from a fw800 drive using pro rez hq?

ya i tried and quickly figured this out. since it came from dvcam it is 8 bit 422 so no point in going 10 bit. well i guess having more range might hel in cc'ing but no matter. i'm going with good ol' dvcpro hd. tried and true.
