What for do I need a mattebox?

Yes, its probably a stupid question, but I never worked with one and I never had have the feeling, that I need one. But it was so often an issue here, that I ask myself: Do I need it? Do I miss some very important things?
I searched for such a basic answer, but didnt find it.

If you work with different lens filters alot, a mattebox makes it easy to switch them out quickly, as well as give you greater control on how you use them. It also serves to help you control how much light enters the lens from each direction (via the french flags).

Plus, they look cool.
