What focus gears to buy?

Just picked up a Chrosziel DV follow-focus for US$700 on eBay and bought a new set of whips and speed crank from Redrock. Now for gears...

I use Zeiss Contax lenses with big focus throws. I don't like the big "wagon-wheel" gears that Redrock sell and the Zacutos concern me that the fastner lug may impede the focus operation.

I'm not mad on the Shoot35 16x screw solution either which may damage the lens grip.

Are there any DIY Delrin gears that are out there? I'm in Australia, so if any Aussie know of a camera tech who can fit gears I'd love to hear from you.

Cheers,
Peter

I imagine RP would be too expensive. But I sure don't want to use DIY gears that damage the lenses and bugger up resale. I may give the Zacutos a go if I think it won't impede the focus throw of the Contax lenses. I think Zeiss ZF users have the same issue with focus throw.

If you're worried about the 360 lens gear denting the focus ring, simply wrap a layer of gaffer tape over it. I do this for all my lenses anyway as the tape prevents the focus gear from slipping on the ring. The tape comes off easily with no residue.

Yes, a bit of inner tube from a bike will do aswell. I think Wayne is working on something to go around the lens to protect it. I borrowed some Zeiss ZF lenses, and the first thing I did was scratch one of them with those rings, so I understand your concern about damaging the lens. A big thick rubber band (like the ones they put on lobster claws) should do it.

It was a new lens aswell :-(
