What else do I need?

Hi, I have been editing for years but I just started a new job in the field and I want to spend ALOT more time playing around editing. SOOOOO, I currently have
Sony Vegas 7.0
Sony DVD Architect 4.0
Adobe After Effects 7.0
and Photoshop CS2

What other programs would anyone or everyone recommend?

Final Cut and Avid. Vegas lacks market saturation and I can't remember the last time I saw an editing job mentioning Vegas.
 
I've worked with AVID before and I am absolutely disgusted with it, I can't stand working with AVID in the slightest. I work with Final Cut Pro at work but currently I own a PC so it's a no go for the home life.
 
I would work on technique rather then get more programs. I have the exact same package as you, and there is so much potential in it, it is almost limitless. Your skills will transcend any particular NLE.
 
I taught myself how to edit with windows movie maker, back in beginning of highschool. Snicker all you want, but I actually taught myself a great deal about editing with that simple little program. And it wasn't even the good WMM with titles and transitions and things, it was the old one. I remember making titles with MS Paint and importing them into the timeline.
 
The thing is, he wants to be an editor. Even if Vegas is just as good as FCP or AVID, the truth is that Vegas is not the industry standard and just makes life harder when it comes to getting jobs editing.

Not that it can't be done.
 
NAh learn Avid and FCP. Theres nothign else out there. Sorry but its true. i love vegas, but i think we are the onlyones who do. Premiere is kind of a lameduck editing system in the professsional sense. noone uses it. Also AVID will run MAC and PC, so most editing stations, have AVID AND FCP on thier MAC's. They are industry standards. I am buying a mac for my next computer so that i can learn it. Gotta learn what the people who pay use.
 
The only reason Premiere Pro isn't bigger than it is is because the regular version of Premiere (i.e. Premiere 6) had a really bad rep and, unfortunately, that bad rep followed them into Premiere Pro. The thing about Final Cut is Walter Murch used it to cut Cold Mountain. To me, it was a huge marketing gimmick - but, apparently, it worked well for Apple.
 
Stick with Vegas...the latest is going to be awesome...and as for no one using it, I think you would be surprised how that is changing...ask Steve Odekerk (IMDB him if you are not familiar with him) who spoke at NAB...the new 64 bit will rock...you might find Sound Forge a good addition too...SONY rocks...not knocking the other prods, just don't like people playinjg down just how good it is...

I used to be a fan of Sony products, but that has changed drastically over the past four of five years.

Depending on your needs, it really doesn't matter what you use to cut your movie as long as it works for you. Of course, if you want to work in the "biz" you will want to learn Avid and FCP.
