What does the Sound Devices MixPre-D record to?

Sorry about the newbie question, but I'm not clear from the reviews I've read on this device. Several similar devices record to CF cards, or in built hard drives, but this one, seems to offer none of the above. Or is this MixPre only usable alongside a camcorder? I wanted the flexibility to be able to use it with or without being connected to a camcorder.

You need to use a recording device with this. It is only a 'pre-amp/mixer' device, and does not convert and record the audio itself.

The reason for its use is to provide a better signal to a recording device, or 'mix' audio signals, when an '4-8-16-etc' channel mixer is not needed or the location can not 'afford' such, for example, running on batteries...

The Sound Devices MixPre D are preamps only and does not record.. at least by iteslf. A suitable audio recorder or camera would be needed to record to. It has a few different output options> +4dB balanced, mic level, tape out, S/PDIF. SD (arguably) makes the best preamps for location sound for picture. The company and it's products are highly regarded by audio professionals.

Yes it can convert to digital in three formats ( 44.1 48 or 96khz), I've read some where that I has a USB port. If you plan to connect it directly to your camera using the analogic output, you must know that the connection is asymmetric, so don't use long cables, because you'll have unwanted frequencies (50 - 60hz). While we're discussing the Mix Pre -D can anyone explain this post?

How can the Mix Pre be used this way?

EDV, as on page 9 of the manual:'The MixPre-D is a USB Audio Device Class peripheral. When attached to a computer as an audio interface, the stereo output bus is sent to the computer as left and right inputs and the left/right audio output of the computer is sent to the headphone output of the MixPre-D.' Cheers, Roland
