What does "Deferred payment" mean?

Hey everyone! I recently moved to LA and have been scouring the various job boards and I keep on seeing "deferred payment". What does this mean? To me it sounds like a different way of saying "we won't pay you"

Hope someone can answer my question!

What does "Deferred payment" mean?
It means that, while a sucker is born every day, the one born yesterday sadly fell off the turnip truck while intensely perusing a dictionary (which was difficult enough to see, considering all the pulled wool) in order to prove the word "gullible" wasn't in fact removed while, however coincidently, driving over the bridge that he had just bought...

Basically you agree to do all the writing up front without pay, and then when and IF they ever make the film and turn a profit, you'll get paid. Maybe.

If you just want the writing experience and/or credits, then do it. I've done a few I have no regrets with because the story and the working relationship was so great - but a few years on no film and no pay every came of them. Yet anyways. Most defers, however, are a major waste of time. As far as I'm concerned if they don't see the value of a good screenplay and a dedicated writer that sticks with the production, then maybe they should write their own scripts.

If you need the cash though, then don't do it.

Depends on how Deferment is defined.

A 1st Deferment usually means that payment is owed out of first monies received, though usually only the stars or director will get this option.

A 2nd Deferment usually means after profit, and basically means they won't ever pay you.

Just keep in mind that, due to creative accounting methods, most Hollywood films NEVER make money. None of the Star Wars films have made a dime of profit yet; moneys go to accounting fees, archiving, promotion, loan interest, studio fees, marketing, royalty payments and a thousand other legitimate tax dodges.
