WHAT DO YOU THINK?

IS THIS KIT WORTH IT? Does this have everything I need to properly light a movie scene for the DVX. I have built a chinese lantern so mentally add that to the kit and let me know what you think.

Here is what the kit contains: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/bnh/controller/home?O=productlist&A=details&Q=&sku=285931&is=REG
Is it worth the money? ??? Thanks!!!

Re: WHAT DO YOU THINK?

This appears to be a hotly debated subject. I bought this kit and, for what it is, I like it very much. The original reason I purchased the kit was to have a good interview lighting kit for some talking head training videos that my company would be doing. Since then, I've been using this kit to light some short narrative work that I'm having a lot of fun doing. These lights have there pluses and their minuses but over all, I like them. Since I bought these I've had a chance to learn a bit about lighting and started looking at other fixtures. I think if I was buying a kit just for "studio lighting" I would probably go with an Arri kit or something like that (there is a fresnel kit that Walter Graff recommends and I'd probably go that route. But I still think these lights have a place. They are very easily transportable, very easy to set up, and they have a nice quality of light. I think the Rifa softbox is one of the better softboxes I've seen. Very quick and easy to set up and it throws a nice light. The little pro lite is my favorite. I wish I had ten of these (well ok, four of them). They're just a really handy little light. You want to light a crystal decanter or candlstick so that it sparkels? It's perfect. It's a perfect hair light. Tonight I'm going to spot a plant with one. You get the idea. The omi light, while not a Fresnel is still a pretty useful light. Shone through a diffuser it makes a really nice soft light. The tota is less versatile, but the more I use it, the more I use it if you know what I mean.

For $1,200 I felt I got a lot of lighting options for the money. I will be adding to this kit and will probably start by adding some Arri Fresnels, but I'm still glad I have this kit. If I had to run out and do a talking head interview, this would be the kit I would grab regardless.

Hope this helps,

Matt

Re: WHAT DO YOU THINK?

For interview this sound like the kit but how about for shooting scenes likes these? Is it possible?

Re: WHAT DO YOU THINK?

Absolutely, a light doesn't light a scene, you do. A hammer doesn't build a house a carpenter does. A camera doesn't take a picture, you do. I could light any of those scenes equally as well with that kit. Interview, dramatic, it's all the same. Lighting is about looking at life and imitating it. We all see life, its learning how to trace it.
