What do you think Vegas is capable of??

Yeah, totally great info guys, Vegas is looking pretty nice.

David, do you think you could lay out a few differences of Vegas compared to Avid Symphony? the reason being so I can understand why Symphony is so much more powerful than a normal NLE application like Vegas or Xpress Pro.

Well, there's tens of thousands of dollars of realtime hardware attached, for one thing, and the ability to work in uncompressed HD.

There are media management and project management and project sharing tools and options which are relevant to big post houses, as well as sophisticated management/EDL tools for cutting actual film.

There's some other technical stuff which I'm not really competent to describe.

I have nothing but good things to say about Vegas- I've tried Avid and I know I have to learn it in order to work in a post house- but I have nothing but problem after problem with Avid Express Pro. I spend 95% of the time troubleshooting and very little or no time editing. You can't beat the realtime effects application in Vegas. And I also like the DVD architect package that works with Vegas too. All in all I give Vegas a huge thumbs up.

ME TOO!!! I started with Avid pro till version 4 then switched to Vegas 5.0 and now 6.0. Glad I did..because the time you save just pushing in the correct keys in Avid..you could do it in a snap in Vegas. I still even use my same Avid keyboard but since Vegas is so much faster the need for keyboard shortcuts is really just for looks. As for OMF file transfer...anyone who worked with AVID knows about that nightmare..Luckily Vegas doesn't have to deal with that.

Since no one really mentioned it, Vegas is great for audio as well. It is extremely easy to use and all the same principles that apply to video in Vegas apply to audio.

My only gripe is the lack of a mixer-style interface. In audio programs, you can toggle between track view and a standard looking mixer view (like channels on a board). I find this and the lack of meters on audio channels the only thing lacking on the audio sire of things.

could you suggest any program which have the interface you are speaking about? or have a screenshot of the mixer-style interface you mean, thanks!

You basically need a sequencer program like protools, sonar, cubase.
If your looking for looping program then Acid will work.
For a editing/mastering program then Wavelab or Soundforge.
For music creating...fruityloops or ableton live 5.

Exactly. This is what I am talking about. It is from Cakewalk's Sonar.

Protools and cakewalk are looking sweet! thanks for the info guys! I've also heard good thing about cubase, so I wil have to begin checking these out!!!

I have a Sound Blaster Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro sound card to use with my computer, will that card add anything to one of these program or is it worthless when it comes to real audio production?

You download the demos from the repective sites...but in order to use protools you will need either a M-audio device or for the LE version you will need at least the Mbox. Sonar and Cubase doesn't need particular hardware but I would recommend that you get a decent soundcard for audio production. You can pickup a entry level one from EMU (0404) or M-audio (2496)for about 100.00 bucks.Just read the down the forum to get ideas of what to get. Soundblaster are more of a gamers soundcard vs a music production card.
