What do you think about this squib hit?

It looks kind of fake to me. Maybe it's the background , but it appears as though you made some changes in post to the blood. Also it looks like you shot this person with a huge paintball based on the blood splatter.

Question : Is this person lying down or standing up with his head tilted back

What is your question. Did you do the shot of the guy at the top of the page? If so, I don't see how it is a squib hit, as even if it is real it LOOKS really, really fake. What is the purpose of posting the tutorial? It is illegal for you to use real squibs unless you have a licenesed person there making sure you don't mame anybody.

the background i cutted off in photoshop. looks much simpler to describe what i want to show.
the question is: what do you guys think about it? (like the whole effect...) this is a shot taken from a cut while he is shot, and falling down. OK, i am not in America so it's ok... besides i got a lisenced guy. thanks for the comments. my new sites about these effects will be up in about 1/2~1 month's time.

the blood to me looks too red. If would be nice if we could see a clip of the action that way I could give a better opinion, but from looking at the picture it doesn't look like a bullet hit unless he was shot with a high powered rifle from behind and it went through his body. I reality a shot from the front doesn't cause blood to shoot out in the burst pattern that is showing in the picture. It generally leaks out of the body.

exactly hit from behind, my thoughts too Wolf

Like I said before, I think it looks very, very fake and cartoony.

alright guys. thanks. now it's not the best shot, maybe coz of too much blood and resulted fake looking.

so let's move on.
in my next squib hit here are my improvements:
1) fewer blood
2) blood not so reddish

and so if it is shot from the front, itshould squirts out; not "exploding" out.

the reason that i am not using the compressed air method is that the blood looks as if it's sprayed out (that's if you have extreamly high blood pressure lol)

and there's another one using rocket igniters to pop the balloon, which leaks out a stream of blood. (not so intense~)

so anyone who has done or seen some good methods of squibbing, please post. also, i want to do about 3 shots this time, so compressed air isn't a really good method. and if there are some safer way as well, post. (or should i carry on with squibs with some improvements?)

oh, and this time i'm going to try it on the same jacket - just first fix it up. thanks for the posts.

Well I don't have a problem with blood squirting out. If you look at most movies the blood is squirting out to some extent but by just looking at this one still it looks the way we said. It's not just one part of the hit it's the whole effect that makes it believable. But darkening the blood some will help. I think another part of the illusion that kind of giving it away is the jacket.
If someone has a jacket on that big you probably wouldn't see that much blood at all if any because it would be soaked up by his clothes under the jacket. If anything for the jacket hit I would do very little blood.

Can you give us some more background as to the specific settings and shot that is happening

quite true. so i think next time i'll use t-shirts or drimac/rain jackets that are really thin. i want to use jacekts is because they look better, and disguising the blood bags better.
i just had an idea: if i use a down jacket, when the guy gets shot, blood-soaked red down & feather "puffs" & "shoots" out... otherwise t-shirt or drimac should do the squirting.

hmm, the shot is or will be (the new squibbing) like in a snowish place, where everything is white. then comes this dude who's got an AK47 or M16 and shoots this guy 2-3 shots. (just like counter-strike) then blood goes everywhere onto the white snow. quite dramatic. what do you think? also, dark coloured clothing or light coloured clothing works better?

i've already got quite a bit of ideas already for my next squibbing from this forum!

Correct. Sounds like a good idea.

Also a good idea.

Blood shots on snow I think would look good. I would go and look at the ballistic information for a Ak-47 and M16 because I believe a shot from those would go through and through. Which wouldn't necessarily be a bad thing. You can show the guy get hit a couple of times in the front them show some squibs blowing out the back which you can have some blood spurting on because it will suck the blood out the back from the vacumm it creates. Then you can show a shot of him on the ground directly above him with his back on the snow and blood leaks out into the snow

Yep, unless the guy was blasted with a shotgun, I wouldn't expect this much mess from a front shot, ESPECIALLY through a down jacket.

The whole effect looks really flat (i.e. like it's painted onto the screen) ... someone said photoshop, and that was my thought exactly.

If you're imitating an AK or an M16 I would consider using a smaller squib for the front and the bigger squib hit (like you have) for the exit wound. Depending on the round used and point of impact, it could indeed leave quite an exit wound. You'll probably still want to tone it down a bit though. Wire the squibs in pairs so that when you fire them off the front and back squibs go off at the same time (for each pair).

Matt

if the actor is getting shot from the front:

maybe stand 45* from the actor, then you will see the front (which will look more 3d when blood is squirting), and a shot of the back is very hard (so i think more blood at the back)
or maybe even 70-80* so you can see 2 squibs going off at the same time, but there wont be a lot of depth --> so i think a close up shot.

or maybe get the guy squibbed a couple of times from the front, then the second cut being squibbed from the back...

i play lots of counter strike with my friends, and everytime i kill someone there is the blood "shoots" out from the front and back... do you think the game is a bit exaggerating? coz i hate looking at "real dead people". otherwise it's OK

thanks a lot guys, i have never actually thought of these! ;-)

Yeah, it's very much exaggerating the blood squirt. It's a video game afterall :)

If you really want to see someone get shot, there's plenty of videos on the net. Most of them resemble the old Westerns more than anything else: guy gets shot, guy falls, vey little blood shoots out. If anything, it just pools around him on the ground.

i'm getting started very soon! planning everything now. western movies are old, and there's somehow no blood (or is it me sterotyping) and just see people getting shot and flew a few metres then fall.... just like that other episode of mythbusters.....LOL

OK ENOUGH SAID about squibs, i am also experimenting on "stab" hits and "arrow" hits. they are simple though, but i've encountered some problems:

i want to stab someone and the knife/dagger/sword goes right through the body and comes out from the back (just a bit to look realer (more real)). i want to do it IN THE SAME CUT, also not close up, but the whole body? i've thought of some "pull string" mechanism to the back part but how do i apply it? it's gonna be low budget so i cant go buy some props.
ok fine -- if that's not possible how do i stab someone then? want to avoid real dull knives... i know how to stab someone in 2 cuts. BUT i want to do it in 1 shot (not stabbing very close up dummies; a whole person shot with someone stabbing him.)

for the arrow hit, i dont want to do reverse clip. looks cheap. i've thought of guiding it with fishing line and at the tip of the arrow apply a tiny packet of blood so when the string is pulled the arrow flies towards the actor and makes a blood mark. but here is the problem: the arrow cannot stay straight and it moves after the actor has been hit. i dont know if guiding the arrow with 3 fishing lines will work or not. and i also dont want to shoot someone with real arrows.

>a bit like the last samurai's special effects<
(you seen tom cruise got squibbed quite a couple of time with lots of blood),
(and that other samurai got shot with lots of arrows),
(and also people got stabbed with swords. but i think that's stabbed under the arm though)
but the setting is modern. seems like i'm gonna kill quite a few people in this new movie... ;-)

too much bloodspatter for a "realistic" hand gun shot.. unless maybe a 44 pointblank.
but besides.. im pretty sure this has got to be photoshopped.. i can make out the layers
