how do you guys deal with low lighting or no lighting situations? what's a cheap way to go about it? and is the something on the camera that i can use to help with lighting?

Re: what do you recomend for lighting.

Whenever possible, you add light. Manufacturers can spout off all they want about 1 lux, or 2 lux or whatever, but the simple fact remains that if you want good-looking video, you've got to have enough light for the camera to see and record colors properly.

On-camera lighting is about the worst way to go -- you get the "deer in the headlights" syndrome, everyone is all washed-out with no shadow, and the subject is always much brighter than the background. But if you have to go on-camera, the Frezzi Dimmer mini-fill is one of the most popular lights around.

so what kind of lighting do you use? Pro or cheap? If you use cheap what do you use filter the direct light?

You can work with whatever lights you have.. if you use halogen work lights you can throw some CTB over them to use them in Daylight settings, or depending on the temp you can add a light gel of CTB or CTO to bring them around 3200k. Home depot now sells 6500k daylight fluros.. you can gel them or if you have a 4 bank add in a cool white bulb to bring them to 5600k.

We cant always use Kinos or HMI's, so if you are a little creative you can get away with alot for cheap. I have a few 150watt smith and vector tungsten heads that came with barn doors for about 50 bucks each that work great for hairlights or anywhere a small light can fit.

thanks for the input, i have a pro photographer who is going to do my lighting, but i can't expect him to be available all the time, this will help me a lot.

Cheap and works: Chinese lantern, try getting 3200K balanced bulbs.
