What do you do after you finish your film- fests/distribution?

I just finished my movie. It came out good. I want to do fests and try to get distribution. Are there certain steps you would recommend. I would really appreciate it?

It really depends upon what your long term aspirations for the film are. If you feel that it has commercial appeal, then before screening it at any old festival, speak with someone who handles distribution for films that are similar to yours. Things like AFM and others are the place where a lot of films pick up their distribution. Do make sure that you have a clear chain of title to all aspects (screenplay, performances, score, logos, etc) before approaching a real distributor. Have excellent marketing tools and great screener copies ready should you meet with someone who shows an interest in your film.

A chain of title is a set of documents that clearly define the path of all intellectual propertie rights associated with the film. It would begin with the screenplay being registered by the writer, followed by the rights to the screenplay being conveyed to the producer, followed by releases from all persons or entities that have any rights of ownership over any aspect of the performance, score, trade marks and more. Sounds like you need to do a bit of research, perhaps its time to contact an attorney that specializes in this field.

I bought a book on film fests, chose the ones I thought I could get into and then sent it out. I got into three so far. Keep it tight. I've read that a short that is five minutes or shorter has a better chance of getting accepted. Mine was five minutes.
