What do you call this when you control brightness?

What do you call this contraption where you are able to control the brightness of the arri fresnel? Are they called light box or something?

Brightness can describe a lot of things: wattage, footcandles, lumens, etc.

Tungsten lights can be put on a dimmer which can reduce brightness. You could throw a scrim or net in front of the bulb which reduces brightness. These all keep the same "quality" of light. Meaning if the light is hard, it stays hard, just gets a bit dimmer.

Now if you want to soften the light, you can get a soft box (which attaches around the light), a silk (which goes on a stand in front of the light), or bounce the light off of a white surface (like a piece of white foam board or a wall). This will reduce the "brightness" of the light while also changing the quality from hard to soft.

What sort of "contraption" are you talking about? Is it some mechanical device that attaches to the lamp like a scrim or a gel or screen or some kind of filter material that the beam goes through? Is it the metal doors around the edge, the "barn doors"?

Or is is some electrical box that the power cord plugs into? (A "dimmer".)
