What do y'all do with your source files?

Just a curious question - what do you guys do with your source files after your shoot? I mean its gotta be really big, especially if you're working in HD. I have a 160gb internal hard disk with a 300gb external and my hard disks ran out of space after working on about 5 or 6 shorts. Do you just delete your source files like that, or do you archive your data somehow?

Well, I don't work in HD yet, but I do have about 2 terabytes of backup for my shorts now. I keep tapes, captured clips, main disk, and back up to an external disk. I used to burn DVDs as an added measure, but the data just got too much. Once the 50gig DVDs are around, I'll start that again, probably.

I just keep buying more hard drives :)

In general, I am not comfortable unless I have the footage in at least 3 places.

I archive everything now. I usually buy an external drive for each film I do. If it's a short, I use one external for two or three films. I think for SD DV it's about 12GB per hour of footage. For certain things like wedding videos I delete my original files, but for my shorts I keep everything. I have currently four external HDD's. One for Smuggler's Ransom (250GB) One for my two shorts, A Price Too High and One Step Ahead (120GB), one for a friend's film I did some work on, and what I am going to use for my next short, Haunted (100 GB) and one for poster and photoshop archives (100 GB)

Oh and at work I've got my work film projects (5) on one 500 GB drive, and two 250 GB drives. And I keep the comedy feature on one 400 GB drive.

Dayum. I CANT KEEP BUYING STUFF LIKE THIS!!! I SWEAR!

Sigh.

110gb on a single short(and thats just the raw footage). Somebody strangle me

No, my shorts come out to about 100gigs ea. Esp if there is compositing, and there almost always is in my comedy shorts.

For my personal one (A Flim Abuot Loev - no i swear the typo is intentional), i used up about 40+ total with everything included. It sucked balls imo, but happy that i completed my own personal short film and i now have bigger things to look forward to, like countdown (%#%#*$ 110gb piece of sh*t. Who knows what it'll be when its done? It'll involve compositing, extensive sound fx, etc

Yep. 120 GBs to be precise. Its on my HD too. Gah. Hey btw would you guys happen to know what kind of specs a windows computer needs to run in order to edit high definition video clips?

Just put an Apple sticker on it, and you should be OK...JOKING! It depends on what NLE software you're using and what brand of HD you're editing.

Ah of course. Apple haha. Yep my friend edits HVX footage with a MAC G5. But damn, I'm using windows. Unfortunately, I cant be bothered to re-learn everything all over again on a new platform. Gosh. I'm actually pretty new to HD. Seems everyone's converting to HD and I'm still shooting SD.

Hmm. What kind of Hi Def? Erm... Is there some sort of specifications on a windows computer that I can get that'll work for all? Details such as i.e. processor speed (how many GHzs), video card, RAM, HDD space, etc. would be helpful. Thanks!

Oh what kind of NLE am I using? Adobe Premiere Pro 2.0. Hope this helps. Thanks!

No, we mean HDV or DVCPro HD. Different sizes for those files.

I just keep buying new HDD's as well. Usually pick up a 300gb at Fry's for around 80 bucks and stick it in a housing i get from Compusa for around 20 bucks. Comes out to around 110 bucks after tax per 300gb's.

One project i have going is at over 200gb for just the footage, no PSD's or rendered footage, and still need about 20 more minutes of DVCProHD footage to go.

When I finish a project, it's finished. I just make damn sure it's really finished (to the n'th degree). I know that's kinda nihilistic (is that the right analogy?), but I at least save the tapes and don't reuse them.
