What do set designers cost?

Live in greater Phoenix area, and my experienced DP recommended that we hire a set designer for the short film we're shooting late next month.

So my question is since this is a 'low/no budget' production, what can we reasonably expect to pay an experienced Set designer for their services? Do they typically charge hourly or by the job?
We've got some pretty handy folks on our crew who can probably assemble whatever is needed, so it should mostly be consulative services we're looking for from the designer.
 
You might find a recent art school grad willing to work for a credit. Don't foget you also have to pay for whatever they build which is where the real $ goes.
