hello! this is my first posting here...
I would like to start filming!!!I have theater knowledge, but no filmmaking! so i wanted to know what would be the starter gear!!!!you know, camera(dvx), programs, computer....what would you recomend!!!!!
Juanation-What kinds of projects do you have in mind? I, too, come from a theater background. I took the step to buy my camera, played around with it for a few weeks, and then found this forum. Now I know that I bought it from an irreputable source, started out using the wrong tapes, cleaned my lens incorrectly... My best suggestion is to cruise the threads on this site, gleaning as much as you can soak up. I work off of a PC and I dont have an NLE that supports 24p yet, but I am settled on Vegas 5.0. I also just ordered Barry Green's guide to video. There is plenty of info avail on this site to help get you going. Are you wanting to know what you need in order to edit footage you have recorded? Or what you need to start recording?
PC or Mac (I use both but, just personally, like the mac better) faster the better
If on a mac, Final Cut Pro
If PC, most ppl think Vegas, Avid and Premier are also popular though (ive never used any of the pc ones so i cant say)
U'll need a fire wire cable, the dvx uses 4 pin to 6 pin, not sure if thats standered, the dvx is my first dv camera
72mm multi-coated UV filter is a must, just to make sure u dont scratch ur lens more than anything
Panasonic Master Quality taps, use them EXCLUSIVLY
there are many other things u need that i cant think of, but a few neccisary items, tripod, lights, stands, hell even cast and crew, can be found FOR FREE at ur local educational hot spot.
I decided to take a preproduction coarse at my local community college. The coarse is a joke, u'll learn much more just from this site, BUT now i can check out all the gear i like for basically as long as I like, wether the projects related to school or not. (U'll wanna purchase these items sooner or later, but for ppl who are just starting out, like u and I, its a great way to just play and learn what u want and need)
Lastly, if ur interested in learning anything about ur camera U MUST pick up barry's new BOOK/DVD combo guide. Barry's helped me on just about everything i can think of, and everyone will probably say the same. at $70 ($60 if u hurry and pre order) its an ABSOLUTE STEAL!
