what do i need to edit gh1 or t2i footage?

i have vegas pro 8. do i need to upgrade to 9? are there any other programs or plug-ins i'll need?

For Rebel t2i you will need to transcode your footage before editing in vegas else it will play quite choppy.

"Cineform Neo scene" is considered best as it is lossless codec for editing with 10bits,
alternatively you can try "Mpeg streamclip 1.2" which is free video converter, player, editor for mac & windows.

If not using Cineform (it has a proprietary coded, doesnt it?) what format is the best to convert to?

I just converted a bunch of stuff to mp4 and it plays horribly.
