What do I need in my new computer for video editing?

I'm frustrated! My computer is way too slow! Can you offer me suggestions of sites where I can build a PC box that will be able to handle movie editing?

Also, what are actual key components that I will need (motherboard, bus, processor, video card, memory, etc...) to create a computer that is powerful enough to handle the demands for this sort of work/play?

How much are you looking to spend? NewEgg.com is a popular choice. I built mine last year with parts from there.

2GB mem (atleast)
500GB Hard drive (SATA)

You might try Dell's refurbished machines. They still have a full warranty, and are steeply discounted. Just make sure you get at least 1 GB of RAM (2 would be better), and as much HD space as you can afford. I put an extra 100 GB drive on my machine and use it only for video projects. Works nice, and when I’m done with a project I just delete everything and start again.

Videoguys has a pretty good DYI section on building solid editing machines...

here's a link: http://www.videoguys.com/DIY.html

Their latest is DYI5 for a core duo machine, but less than a year ago the AMD X2's were reigning supreme. See DYI4.

I've been thinking about just buying an off-the-shelf HP and sticking in a few extras (dual video card, more RAM, etc)...with those running about $900, it's about half the price.

Whatever you go with, one thing you don't need to spend a lot of money on is a video card -- unless you're also working in After Effects. Vegas is all about the processor and the RAM.
