What do I make a movie about?

In the last month I've emptied out my checkings account on video equipment. Lights, camcorder, audio equipment, you name it.

Then tonight it sank in -I have no idea what to make movie about.

I feel really dumb. It's like buying a really fancy wallet and not having any cash to put inside.

Yeah, personally I have about 100 scipt ideas lined up and pretty much never lack something I want to make. But like Blaine said, the fests are a good way to give yourself some focus and motivation.

Just keep in mind, the more characters and locations your story has, the more it will cost you. Same goes for stunts and effects. Keep it simple.

All dressed up and no where to go. When I was a lad, a well-established producer scoffed at my desire for gear when I had no projects (or prospects for same) lined up.

It made me all the more resolute in my procurement of camera, lighting and sound kit. Then it all sat around for the most part - for a really long time.

I'd give you the same advice he gave me. Buying a big lump of gear without a project to engage it on is wasteful.

I've learned that he was right. Wait for the project, then buy or rent what makes sense against it. Once you've become established as a producer or broker, you'll find that magic formula for when purchases make sense and when they're frivolous.

I love buying gear, but he was absolutely right. That first Arri camera, Mole and B&M lighting and the Nagra would have done significantly more good in someone else's hands.

Jump into or collaborate on the next DVXUser fest. The experience will push you to practice your chops until those paid gigs start rolling in!
