What Causes Artifacts?

I have several projects that were edited in FCP then burned to DVD. When I watch them on my flat tv here at home everything looks great. Last night I took my dvd over to a friends house to show them my work and on his regular screen tv you could see a lot of artifacting in some of the shots....I know that the Flat screens deliver more clarity and rich colors then the non flat screens. I don't have a plasma screen but its a wide flat screen. Any ideas why I noticed this on his TV but not on mine? The funny thing is that he didn't notice anything was wrong! LOL! Maybe thats a good thing...I am just over critical about how I want my work to look.

Re: What Causes Artifacts?

TVs are very complicated beasts these days... often with differnt modes (cinema, sports, standard, vivid, etc.) on top of all of the standard adjustmenst for brightness, contrast, sharpness, etc.

So, every TV is going to make your work look different.

Is your flat screen a flat CRT or an LCD? LCDs are very different from CRTs... especially wrt noise, which they don't have the lattitude to show as much of...

Re: What Causes Artifacts?

But by "Flat Screen" do you mean LCD or Flat CRT? That is, Is it big and heavy and glassy or light, much thinner than it is wide/tall, with a plastick-y screen?

Re: What Causes Artifacts?

Back to the original question, what causes artifacts and how do you clean them up? If everything looks okay on my computer monitor and on my TV set but might not look good on someone elses TV how can I correct this?

Re: What Causes Artifacts?

It would be good if you could describe exactly what you mean by artifacts. But basically, your video will look different on every TV. For a "true"er image, get and properly calibrate a broadcast/production monitor.

Re: What Causes Artifacts?

well it looks like digital noise or digital breakup in the video. I notice it when I have shots that fade to black. I see it in shots that have a lot of red in them like a red car, red stop sign, etc. Everything looks nice and clean when I am editing on the timeline but once I output to dvd then watch it on a TV I noticed what I just described.

Someone just posted a pic of the same problem here on this site in the TECHNICAL section. He is getting Artifacts in the Reds like I am. I am getting it in the Reds, Blacks, and Oranges.
