What can I do with a drill press?

So my father got a drill press for a project he's working on. Any good rigs or other DIY camera stuff that require or can be made easier with a drill press? Just trying to take advantage of it.

A drill press is an important part of a fabricator's set of tools. Unfortunately, I don't own one and have been doing all my drilling with my eye making sure the hole is straight.

I have used: Millermatic MIG welder, Milwaulkie drill, Makita grinder, cut off saw, Milwaulkie sawzall, air cut off wheel, grinder with wire wheel and grinding wheel, files and assorted tools to build stuff.

I reeeeeally wish I had a drill press and a TIG welder... Life would be lighter and easier. Cool for you! :engel017:

A drill press is very limited when compared to a milling machine.

Common uses for a drill press are tap, drill and thread.

Make sure to buy a X-Y vise table to make life easier on the drill press, if a X-Y table is used you will have to center the table and quill to each other using a dial to sweep a face, check to see what kind of column the machine has, if it has a round column like most drill presses do, you will want to make sure you get a X-Y table with a bottom swivel plate as this will make setting "0" a lot easier.

Make sure to purchase full face protection, as when a bit shatters it can very easily enter your neck.

Beware machining is very addictive, and the machines are cheap compared to the cost of tooling.

Have fun.

I use a drill press every day pretty much. A must if you need precision when you are making rigs. For instance, it was a huge help making my DIY jib. It was so hard to get squared off holes in a round tube, actually paid for itself on the 1st project... I also have saved myself many drill bits... if you were like me, I would have a broken drill bit every project... not anymore.

oh yeah and of course use one for the halo rigs.

You'll need nice drill bits, vise, clamps, etc.. Oh and most important eye wear.

Check one of these out too.
