What camera should I buy?

Hi all, hopefully, this is the right forum for this question. I'm looking to purchase a camera so that I can begin to shoot shorts, music videos, maybe even a feature length movie.

I was looking at the HV10 or HV20 because they seem to be in my price range, which is $500 - $1,000

Any help would be appreciated as I would like to buy the camera ASAP.

this is DVXuser.com
so I would recomend you the DVX100.
not sure if you can find one for $1000 but I'm sure you can find used ones in the $1000~$1500 range.

the hv20 is an amazing camera but I still like the DVX more.

Hi ryvac, thanks for the quick response. I would love to get a DVX, but, my budget is maxed out at $1,000.. frankly, that's gonna be a stretch. But, I decided the hell with it, I'm going to buy a camera so I can start shooting.

I saw some used Canon GL2s listed on Amazon for around $1,000. How does the GL2 compare to the HV20 and the DVX100?

The GL2 image is not comparable to the DVX100. It's not good in low light and has more noise.

1/4" CCD's instead of 1/3" CCD. And the DVX can shot in progressive.

I find the picture of the DVX100 much better than the GL2.

well what are you mainly going to use the camera for?
I simpley got the dvx because I shoot film stuff.
the gl2 is good if you are doing documetary stuff maybe... (never used the gl2 tho)

if your budget is $1000 then have you thought about the sony pd150?
I think the used one go around for $1000 so you might want to think about that too.
I would say I perfer the pd150 more then the gl2.

watch a lot of footage from each camera, you should know how each camera shoots video and go with the look you like:)

Thanks to all of you for your suggestions and input. Since this is my first real camera I decided to get a less expensive consumer camera, one that had gotten decent reviews and shoots decent quality. I went with the Canon HF200. Once I get comfortable with handling the camera, I will definitely upgrade to the DVX.

i own a HV10. audio is extremely poor. be ready to have a dual system to capture audio else where.
the HV20 has a few improvements from the HV10 such as audio support and 24 frames.

HV10 only does 60i.

The DVX is a great SD camera, but an HF200 in the right hands, used properly and within it's limitations (ample lighting is a must), can give you a picture that just knocks the snot out of anything you can get out of a DVX.
