what camera bag?

Hi-
Does anyone have any recommendations on a good camera bag? It needs to be small enough to pass as carryon luggage, but large enough to fit a DVX plus a few accessories... and if it can also fit a 17" powerbook then it's perfect! Anyone have suggestions, or experiences with any good bags?

I bought one of those big photographer's bag, which you can adjust to fit your camera and accessories.

All the best

Re: what camera bag?

DV 4 from Portabrace. Wide enough (just) for a matte box. Plenty of space for other stuff. Nice bag.

Re: what camera bag?

I've found something cheaper than kata, Protec.
They actually make bags for musical instruments.
The trumpet bags actually fit the dvx100..

Re: what camera bag?

I just got the Porta Brace DV Organizer. It's great. I also don't need the audio tub I was using, since my audio gear fits neatly into the Porta Brace. That's one less thing to carry!

Re: what camera bag?

I second the CompuTrekker. It fits my 12" PB, but it does seem pretty big, so it might be able to hold the 17".

Re: what camera bag?

thanks for the input everyone! i'm leaning toward the cinebags production bag right now... jarred: do you know if it'll fit the 17" laptop and the dvx at the same time? the dimensions give that impression but i was just wondering if you knew for sure. Also, have you tried using it as carry-on luggage?
thanks again,
dan

Re: what camera bag?

not a hope in hell will it do carryon. It will hold 2 dvx's and 3 or 4 laptops though and still have room to spare. my laptop fits in one of the side pouches, just get one of those padded shells.

Re: what camera bag?

wow those are huge... but i really need the carryon feature, so I guess the cinebag is out for now. the porta brace sounds like a good option, but has anyone tried the kata bags? the bp-502 (backpack) and the mc-60 both look terrific on their website, anyway...

Re: what camera bag?

I've been looking at the LowePro Photo Trekker AWII backpack http://www.lowepro.com/pages/series/trekking/phototr.htm. It has great space, dividers and a tripod mount. The design aspect that I don't like is the big padded hip belt. The most up to date backpacks are using light ergo design shoulder and hip pads. I think they're overdueing it a little with the padding and pads really don't fold into the pack very well. Also it's a little pricey $230.

The alternative that I'm leaning toward is buying a Mountainsmith Ghost backpack $150 @ REI.com and fitting it with Pelican dividers $50 @ www.pelican-case.com. Both the pack and the dividers fit the FAA requirements of 22"L x 14"W x 9"D. The Mountainsmith Ghost pack is an award winning design.

The other reason why I like these bags is because they look like backpacks and not like camera cases, so they are less likely to walk away.

I have the Mini-Trekker version without the laptop pocket and it easily carries a DVX and accessories.[/quote]

Barry, I bought the minitrekker today, do you keep your anamorphic lens in it? And if so, did you ditch the leather carrying case the lens comes in? Is that safe enough?

On that subject, what else do you carry in yours if you dont mind me prying 8)

Thanks,

David

Well, if I owned an anamorphic lens, that's where I'd keep it. Using some sort of dustproof pouch would be a good idea for the lens--and make sure it's snug between dividers.  Ok, here's what's living in my pack at the moment:

DVX100, ME64/ME66/K6 mics, Lightwave Equalizer furry, AT-U101 wireless set, AT8415 shockmount, 4 extra batteries, charger, mic cables, firewire/AV cables, lots o' tapes, lens cleaning fluid/tissues, microfiber cloth, blower brush, gaffers tape, power bars, white/gray card, leatherman tool, asst. filters, small pack towel, pens, notebook, release forms, and a first-aid kit.

Re: what camera bag?

Anyone use pelicase for the dvx-100? I want to know if they are fine. And what type are you using, size etc.?

Re: what camera bag?

Just got the dv organizer in on Monday. It's pretty nice, pretty roomy considering. However, it's barely too narrow to fit the dvx with 411-53 down inside it from the top straight in. I can put it inside on it's side, but not right side up. Too bad :( It will fit when i take off the mattebox though. What a pain.
