Hi Howard, you can visit www.evsonline.com, email me at rush@evsonline.com (put "dvxuser" in the subject field), or call at 800-238-8480 and tell us you're a DVXuser to get the discounts. We price match with B&H, and do better on many items. Tiffen 72CP runs $65.

I never noticed anything.

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

Kai,

What was that you mentioned about getting laid to tape? Getting laid to tape what? Weddings?
I have tried 2 rental A's here in the store, no noise.  I think it really depends on the mic and the quality of the headphones too.  Also, if the gain is turned way up, there's SHHHHHHH (white noise?) no matter what cam you use.
I have posted this before and I am glad to see others finally discussing & noticing it too.  The first 100A camera I bought I sent back because I thought the headphone hiss was surely a technical defect.  The replacement camera had the same problem so I realized it might not be a defect.  I went to a local shop and listened to two more and unfortunately concluded with the salesman that this was a serious flaw in the camera, if being able to hear your audio clearly was an expectation you have with this camera.

This occurs at all levels whether low, medium or high.  With the volume all the way up it is really bad.  When I compare this to my 8 year old VX-1000, my VX-1000 clearly has superior headphone quality to the DVX-100A.  This is unfortunate but, no, it is not recorded to tape.

It is not a mic issue because you can hear this noise whether or not you have a mic plugged in.  I have a Sennheiser 416 & Evolution 500 wireless so it shouldn't be an issue.  I don't know how you would immediately know using this camera if your mic weren't working correctly in terms of recording hiss, etc.

4 months later, I have learned to live with it and it is just an unfortunate aspect of this awesome camera.

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

I concur with the above posts regarding background "hissing" noise on the 100A. Happens with AT-897 shotgun, Sennheiser wireless, various hand-held mics, you name it. My headphones are sturdy, above average quality (but not top of the line) Sennheiser.

None of that noise gets recorded to tape but it *is* annoying, especially when recording sound on an expensive wireless set and you start thinking, What ? Haven't I spent enough money on that thing already? >:(

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

I am going to test my floor models also, I have to hear this for myself... I have only professionally shot with the 100, not the 100A, so I will have to see what it sounds like. Thanks guys. :)

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

I haven't heard any out of the ordinary hiss from my DVX100A. Of course, I have a couple of VX2000's that are both hissy in the headphones and on tape. The DVX100A is wonderfully clean on tape. Best I have heard on a camera in this price range.

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

I've got the same "problem" ... until now I used headphones very seldom and mostly in loud surroundings so I never realized that there was that noise. I got a DVX100A PAL model - recorded on tape the sound is fantastic but through the headphone jack I got really annoing noise - it doesn't even matter if I turn the volume down all the way.. the noise stays at a constant level! :-/
But well.. I can live with it but it's a little annoying nonetheless...

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

Hi Rush

thanks for offering to test the headphone output on your floor models. I was going to ask if I could come into the store with my 100A with I recently got from EVS to check against the ones you have in store. I'll wait to see what results you get.

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

Hi Som, why don't you drop by tomorrow morning and we will test all the cameras together. I like having someone else there to give me a second opinion. Do you have some time?

As in, good thing that hiss in the cans doesn't get laid to tape... (or at least it seems)

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

Yeah, sure is Kyle.

Som, I'll see you tomorrow at 11am!

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

Kai,

I knew what you were saying the first time. I was just making bad joke that apparently nobody got, or thought was funny, so it was a realllllly bad joke.

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

Hello all, Svilay and I just tested his DVX100A against my DVX100A and DVX100. ALC was off, OIS was on, Phantom was off, and we used an ME66/K6 combo in Input 2, going to both channels, with HD280PRO headphones for output. Gain was set 30% up, and normal speech was just barely touching the 0 mark. Neither one of us is an audio engineer, and we only used our ears to test the difference.

We found that in this config, both his and my DVX100A did produce a slightly higher level of ground level hum than my DVX100, but not to such a degree that it intervened with proper functioning of the camera. If I wasn't swapping the inputs back and forth from the 100A to the 100, I probably wouldn't have noticed. But I know that others would, and have. The good thing is that, like others have said, the audio hum does not get recorded to tape.

We may be off on left field here, but we figured that the reason that hum is there now is because the 100A now has volume control in Camera mode, whereas the 100 only used to have that in VCR mode. We figured that due to that upgrade in circuitry, it probably added some more hum. Hope this helps.

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

It is my understanding that the 100A has boosted the headphone volume output. Perhaps the hum is coming from that? As long as it's not recorded on tape...

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

I think that's what happened, Barry. Not just that, but also being able to control the volume level probably had something to do with it. Maybe it's like when you put a studio light on a low-end variac, and when you dim it low, sometimes it starts to whine a little. Being a DP, that's the only similarity I can draw... :)

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

Rush, I'm glad we had a chance to test out the three DXV's. Thanks for your help.

Re: What are your Necessary DVX Accessories?

Anytime, Som. It was my pleasure.
