What are you?

When I first came to this forum way back when it seemed like a lot of the members here were hobbyist filmmakers working with the DVX100 because it was the first cameras to give their shoestring budget movies a film-like 24p motion.

I'd like to get a poll of sorts going to see just where most people on this forum stand today.

So are you a:

1. Working professonal filmmaker (big shows, TV, features, national advertising)
2. Working professional videographer (corporate, events, weddings, local TV commercials)
3. Mostly hobbyist / parttime professional (aka you do weddings or events here and there for extra cash but have a full time job elsewhere)
4. Strictly hobbyist filmmaker / videographer (shoestring budget indie films / home videos)

You can reply with just a number.

1.8?

Mostly web, corporate, local TV, but edging into broadcast (national and international) and advertising. Haven't done a wedding.

1. Since you asked for big stuff. Big shows, Shot the Chappelle comeback tour at Radio City (DRAGON), Big features, Was NY and Philadelphia Unit (camera Op, Dp for the original movie trailer) for Kevin Heart Laugh at my pain feature (EPIC, SCARLET). For National advertising, well if you been to a Regal, AMC, Cinemark theater in the past year then you prob seen a commercial I DP'd for NCM (company that does all the advertising for theaters, i.e. coke, films etc.)(SCARLET) But I mainly do Independent films, a lot of Music videos and commercails.

I would add independent films to a category.

I would add independent films to a category.

I would say that classifies under #1. Even if they are smaller indie films, if you're making a living doing it, you're living the dream. :)

I'm a #2 BTW, who dabbles in indie film as a hobby.

Strictly #4, hobbyist. Have worked on feature films as a grip, but don't currently work in the film industry.

None of the above.

What am I? Mostly I'm pissed off.

Actually, I do audio post for low/no/mini/micro budget projects, so I'm not a really filmmaker but a crafty that supports filmmakers

Well, I don't usually like to talk about myself....OK, just this once

#2 minus the weddings.

Editing > Camera for the most part these days

1.8. I do mostly corporate web promo stuff, but work on a few bigger things. AC for
American Eagle Outfitters, DP for a national cable pilot, DIT for another national
network pilot, gaffer for The Amazing Race, location scout for Discovery Channel,
2nd cam on a few docs which have played nationally on PBS, random stuff like that.

A little of this, a little of that...I still do a lot of post production work (wasting time here while things render!), some music videos, extreme sports, corporate stuff, short films, TV, but I've done all of it except weddings at some point in my "career". I've also had desk jobs that kept me completely out of production so I was even a hobbyist for a bit. Basically, I have a hard time answering the "What do you do?" question.

I shoot products. I work for a company that makes products. I shoot them. I make little videos. They're all the same. They have to be. I have no crew. They are short videos so they're convinced I don't need a crew. I've done about 200 in a year. This is seriously a big test for me, do I want to do this for the rest of my life or not.

So yeah, I dunno what that would make me. I shoot I light I color I edit I composite. But no actors. No shows. No crew. Am I a videographer? I really don't know. There are no 'traditional' filmmakers where I work. I say traditional meaning filmmakers who were trained or have discovered the hard way that they are part of a crew.

I'd guess or I'm #2, or this really weird #4 who gets paid? I dunno.

I would do anything to shoot a person pretending to feel something because of what another person pretended to say, in a pretend setting. With nice lights. I'd love to be a #4.

I'm a freelance AV stagehand/engineer who works corporate, concerts, and a few broadcast clients. In my spare time, I'm a budget indie filmmaker, sometimes for hire, but mostly my own projects. I guess I'm a #3, but #2 is gaining because I have a clients in corporate video/ live events.

Like OP, I found this forum when I bought my DVX100. Sold it for a HVX200. Now I'm back years later because of the GH4, which has introduced me to DSLR shooting.

I guess 3.5.

I've done a few things for pay, but it's never been my job. I'm a retired teacher and although I occasionally get asked to do a few paid jobs, I'm currently limiting myself to volunteer things like web promos for school groups and local arts non-profits.

1.8

Mostly events and internal work for large corporations. Still Photography and Video. Have done some work for NBC, news, and have about 3 million hits on youtube.

I mostly produce but also wholesale and freelance as a DP, Camera Op or Steadicam Op.
