What are you using for projects requiring -- BIG -- HDD space?

I have about 40 hours of HDV and about 20 hours in 720/30 P2 so Im trying to figure how Im going to get all this media together and edit it.

why must I have all the media pulled in at the same time?

in most segments of this piece, its multi-cam footage so there will be:

track 1: HDV CAM 1
track 2: HDV CAM 2
track 3: P2 CAM 3
track 4: 3359x1049 pan and scan screen capture quicktime movies (also quite large file size)

ALL in sync...

question..

is anyone here using big/multiple bay SATA enclosures? what are you using?

what is the workflow?

I ask because I thought I'd be able to get away with a Lacie 2big Quadra and a couple Granite Digital 2 Bay SATA aluminum enclosures-- but --- it seems like the only way I will get all the video pulled in -- and in RAID 1 -- will be to invest in something like an 8 bay or more enclosure.

NOTE: I cant stand the proprietary solutions (where they force you to use only their drives and trays - which seem to be much higher priced than otherwise).

Ick- avoid LaCie. Not a brand I like I'd go with G-Tech or Cal Digit. Those have always been better luck for me.

do those company's make you use only their tray/drive?....anyone used trayless? (seems like trayless would be more convenient)

are these solutions cross platform (bootcamp)

I built my Sata enclosure in computer enclosure enclosure with a port multiplier, five seagate drives, a bunch of fans, and an esata card. Works pretty good. No trays, haven't had the need.

I have a first generation MacBookPro, which runs a Sonnet Express34Card with 2 E-Sata ports.

One connected to a Lacie Drive with E-Sata, FW800, FW400, and USB, and the other connects to my disk array. The HDDs are 5 750gb Seagates, with a Silicon Imaging 5 Port Multiplier in an enclosure. The enclosure I bought over here (I am overseas, packed the smaller components from the US and bought the bulky enclosure here for peanuts) which has a beafy power supply for the job. I used an old tower as an enclosure for them back in the US (in fact, I first built it out of legos for fun).

The sonnet esata card was purchased direct from SonnetTech (their online store), the HDDs were purchased from Newegg.com, the fans from tigerdirect.com, and the port multiplier from here http://www.addonics.com/products/host_controller/ad5sapm-e.asp

The only critical point to make here is that the drives, if raided, function as a software controlled raid. That was never a problem for me, and for my work is fast enough for sure, but I realize for some it might just be an issue.
