What are you using for a daylight balanced backlight/kicker?

nothing

When lighting with tungsten, I mostly use a 750w ellipsoidal for small sets, and a 2k fresnel or two for larger. Lately I find myself shooting more stuff at 5600k indoors, and I don't own a good backlight solution for daylight.

Soft light at 5600k is no problem, but directional blue light with some throw is harder to come by for cheap, it seems.

Do I need to bite the bullet and get a Joker-Bug? Any cheaper yet still good alternatives?

There are cheaper alternatives to the Joker Bug. For example, a quality, used 575 Par HMI can be found for around $1000 - $1500. Start with Ebay.

The 150W CDM Fresnel from Cool Lights is very nice as a backlight. It's approximately equivalent to a 650W tungsten Fresnel in output (but daylight balanced and runs much cooler). For a single subject, I most often run mine with at least one full scrim installed. It sounds like you're used to working with higher light levels than I usually employ, though. I bought one to try it out and fully intend to pick up a couple more soon.

Slap a gel on that 750 and you're set. It's cheap and more than sufficient for most small interior setting. For close-up a soft source like a flourescent can easily be used as a hard kicker when position properly.
