What are you inspired by?

With so much done before and so many stories already told, how do we innovate?

What fuels your creativity?

People at train stations and stuff like that. People telling stories about ther lives to strangers, which can be VERY interesting to listen to.

Do ya'll really think there are truly original stories left out there? Or just more innovative ways to re-make the past?

Been having a downer of a week, so sorry for the pessimism.

no worries T.

i think is good for filmmakers to ask themselves these questions.

I think there are lots and lots of original stories our there -- maybe it's just finding an original way to tell them.

My wife.

That's the kind of answer our wives would appreciate.

Fear inspires and drives my creativity. It's why I'm so obsessed with horror movies. I find fear to be one of the most incredible emotions humans have... And I like to manipulate that motion. :D

that is interesting Luis. is she your muse? source of encouragement? how does she fuel your creativity? (if you dont mind me asking)

I don't mind at all. Though I'm not sure anyone else wants to hear about it.
:)

She is a never ending source of encouragement.
She keeps me going - literallly - she asks me every day what I've been working on, reminds me to make time to work on a script I'm trying to finish up - she goes so far as to offer to do things around the house that I should be doing so that I can write instead.

I've been working as a freelance director/editor for the past 5 years, and only in the past few has business picked up enough for me to feel 'stable' financially - it was really touch and go in the beginning.... and during that time (we weren't married yet, but we've been together for about 9 years) she kept her stable job that she hates so that we could have some stability - basically putting her things on hold until my projects and my work took shape. That's enough motivation to keep anyone going ... I had to do something with myself after she sacrificed her time like that.

She's a great sounding board for ideas also, and gives me (for the most part) honest feedback - instead of just the "oh you made this, then I like it" type of feedback that can really warp your perception of what you're working on.

Everytime I've hit a low point, and we all have them, she reminds me why she fell in love with me in the first place, and tells me that if I quit working on creative projects that I'll be quitting the part of me she likes so much.

She fuels my creativity by humoring my thoughts - she's a lot like me in that she's willing to discuss just about anything to it's absolute adsurd conclusion.... it's hard to explain... but we have a lot of conversations that keep my mind thinking in interesting directions....

She's also an incredibly creative and talented person in her own right - her still photography puts me to shame.

Probably more than you wanted to hear - but there you go.
:)

So, she isn't the ONLY thing that inspires me... but I would have a very difficult time gaining any inspiration without her, that's for sure.

I guess, in all seriousness, one of the things that fuels my creativity is a lack of something. Or a need for something that I lack. It could be just about anything, as long as it was something I could want, but do not have.

The want /need and lack thereof forces me to find ways within myself to conjure it up in some form or another. If the emotion evoked is strong enough, it can manifest in a number of ways. Remembering someone I love who has passed away evokes every emotion I've every felt in connection with that person, and I can then shape that emotion into real characters and action.

That's just a for instance. But I am wierd.

:)

I don't know if I would say that "a lack" fuels my creativity...or inspires me...
but I think it is definitely a driving force behind all art. It seems like a prerequisite of sorts.

John Cassavetes once said something along the lines of "you don't make a movie to say something, you make a movie to learn something"

I think a feeling of 'lack' is something that fuels most artists to create - though I think many times we draw our inspiration from other things.

I think we're all a little weird here.

I don't know - I still think she got the raw end of the deal in this marriage.
:)
But thanks.
