What are those giant softbox down lights you see on sets called? Often they seem about a few metres across and generally hang above the set.

I've heard them called coffin lights or chicken coops--but most of the time they are
just called a softbox. There are different brands and designs that have there own
name for them though.

HLB, go to Google books and find "Set lighting technician's handbook." Then within it search for chicken coop.

There's a fourth edition just out. It's the bible for lighting guys.
