What are the options with radio mics?

Hey everyone,

I would like to know what the options are for radio mic packages from the bottom end of the pro/semipro range to the top of the top.

I have a Sony UWP-C1 setup, but have a weird problem: anyone ever noticed a breathing/pumping style hiss when people speak over this system?

Im just looking at my options for an upgrade....

well, yes, i know the G2s are good kits, especially for what they cost, but is there no light beyond the sennheiser tunnel?

i mean, what is the standard radio rig on, say, a feature film? On BBC Prime shoots? etc etc etc...

Timapter, your question is very open-ended. What type of project(s) are you recording? Are you looking for run and gun or sit, mix and record? The G2's are good mid-range kits, but are missing diversity. If you can go SMR, then you can get a diversity receiver for the G2's that extends it and makes it a better kit. But, at the high end of the range is Zaxcom. Many "pros" say that the only kit they consider as good as cable is the Zaxcom. Lots of people at the high end are also using the Lectrosonics 4xx and 2xx series with good success. For a pro standard, generally you're looking at Lectro. I also notice you are in South Africa. Radio frequency and transmission issues are different there than they are here in the U.S., so it may be difficult to give you a specific answer to your question.

No, thats a good answer... Here in SA we dont get a lot of transmission issues, but diversity is obviously very important... Lecro and Zaxcom... Cool, thanks...

Im asking with reference to a feature, but also for television work..

for lavalier work - everything above g-2 is good for features
for boom work everything above audio ltd / lectro 200 /micron700 , lectro 400 zaxcom
the benefit of zaxcom is especially when you run quality mikes on boom or use it as feed link to your camera
the benefit of g-2 and the similar is to say 'o yes i have wireless :-)
for features work look for receivers which could be attach to external antenna or rf distributor if you need grate range on the set
directional antenna would increase your range 3 times more some times .
remember that European version are 50mw and the US are 100 or 250 mw transmitters for lectro
the zaxcom is 100 maximum
the audio ltd and micron 50 mw
the Sennheiser 5011,sk -50 -50 mw
sk-250-250mw
the g-2 is 30 mw maximum _+,- 3db (hhahhah)
if you dint have rf issues in your aria the high fq units have shorter antennas if it become an issue , nothing to do with quality of the signal they transmit
