what are the biggest factors in a mac's performance in FCP?

I am thinking of buying a mac system (as you've maybe read in other posts) but would like to spend as little as possible. I will be editing HD. My question is, what components of the computer have the most significant effect on performance?

The reason I ask is because if I can buy an older mac, a G5 or G4 that's only downfall is an older processor, but then really beef it up with aftermarket RAM, VRAM, and hard drive space, then I'd rather go that route and save some major money.

My experience with computers has always been that CPU speed is a macho thing. It doesn't have nearly as much influence over the speed of the computer as does video ram, ram, and a fast hard drive. Since HD has been around for awhile now, I'm sure people here have edited HD on a G5. What's been your experience?

Nothing macho about it, FCS is designed to take advantage of the power of the latest machines. The older the machine the less performance you'll have in all departments. Try to stay at or above a fast G5. I'd rank most important as:

1- Processor
2- GPU
3- RAM
