what are the audio standards for broadcast?

hello all!

i realise that is a horrible vague question. but... im doing some work for a South African broadcaster, and was curious what you guys get briefed for final delivery?

i mean: what is max peaks? average rms? max rms? delivery medium? stereo/mono? etc etc.... just curious how things work over there.

do you guys have any general tips for mixing down to a file that will work well on tv? im a bit concerned about "perceived" volume.. will a normally compressed and mixed piece of work sound soft on tv? or do broadcast processors just make everything similar?

interested to hear your opinions.

PS - im about to invest in a controller for my studio. i work on Nuendo 3 on PC, but will probably invest in a mac sometime soon and a protools setup for that, (not with the digi002, i already have a FW410 for basic in/out). im thinking of either the mackie universal control, or the steinberg houston. anyone have any thoughts, or other options?

Broadcast standards vary network to network. Get them to send their standards to you, they have it on paper somewhere. If your hotter than they expect (and they don't reject the mix) the broadcast limiters will do a very squashed version of your mix. Others are more knowledgeable than I on the details but you want to be at the top of their acceptable range so the limiters don't doo too much damage.
