what are studio strobes?

i've been looking everywhere for lights (rostronics, ebay, etc) and i keep coming across strobes. I keep walking passed because i dont want strobe lights, but now im begining to think maybe they're not the kind of strobes i'm thinking of.

Can any one explain what these strobes are?

Re: what are studio strobes?

Photographers use them. The are synced to the cameras flash and flash/strobe every time you take a picture and the flash is activated. I don't think they have a purpose in film/video.

them's are lights from a company called "lighting strikes", although there's probably more players on the block now.

A while back there was a pretty cool music video where the DP used lighting strikes units to light the set. He set the lights to flash at 24 or 30 fps (whatever he was shooting at), and then completely removed the shutter from the camera. This turned the strobes into the "shutter" as the film ran freely through the gate at the regular rate.

For added effect, they put a couple of incandescent lights in the scene, which resulted in bright vertical streaks from the constant exposure.

It was a pretty cool effect.
