What are people thinking???

Just read this post on Facebook...

"Need a luxurious place to shoot the first pilot of a reality series to be featured on HBO. It is the type of place a Sugar Daddy would live in. The shoot is going to be tonight from 6 to 9pm. There is a budget... PLEASE let me know asap if you are someone who has a place like this or know someone. Thx! :)"

Let's see..... You're shooting a pilot for an HBO reality series. You're shooting TONIGHT. And you still don't have your location locked???? Which means you've done no lighting planning, no sound planning, and no blocking. But you're shooting TONIGHT.

Good Lord!

I see waaayyyy too much of this kind of stuff.

It is ridiculous, BUT I have been "Behind the scenes" of a VERY popular reality show (that involves "picking"). Generally the producer and the talent spend about 10 minutes deciding basically how the scene is going to go, maybe coming up with a few must use lines, and then rolling. I mean it is "reality" TV (though of course it's not, it's all staged).

That being said, I think I'd still want my location locked before the day of the shoot.

Well see, what they mean when they say "going to be featured on HBO" is... "How cool would it be if we got this thing on HBO?"
There's so many people out there making ridiculous promises on what their media's going to do. One of the easiest ways to spot someone who doesn't know what they're doing and that I don't want to work with-- when they tell you how great their film/pilot/web series is going to do.

I mean, I know as well as anyone else that your location can drop out at the last minute. But come on. Anyone saying their *piece of media* is GOING to be on *major exhibition* is full of crap. By definition, a pilot hasn't been picked up yet. I always chuckle at everyone wanting a crew to work for deferred pay on a feature that's going to play at sundance and cannes. Sure.

There's always a chance they had a location all set and it fell through. But yeah, this stuff does seem to come up an awful lot. The last one I saw was a Craigslist post for a music video shooting the next day. All they needed were some extras- about 100 of them. There might be food if all goes well.

Or: "I have a great idea for a movie (web site/business/invention), I just need a DP, Editor, and a Producer to help make it happen.

You will get a credit and work for your portfolio. Must have a camera, lighting, and audio equipment ...."

Like, I am such an effing genius, and I HAVE AN IDEA.

I just need the people who know all of the technical and creative to pony up, so that I can take all of the credit and profit, because I have an idea. Get in fast before it is too late, I need talented people and I'm going to be really selective .... And, I will mention your name.

Craigslist. Bah, humbug ...

Here's one. This isn't the worst - not quite as egotistical - but close:

Short Film - Independant * Identity Theft by Hacker (Detroit)

I have a great idea for a movie with up to date topics and ideas.

Start:

Drama featuring an individual being followed by camera while stealing a person identitiy and the steps involved:
*Picks victim using talent as a socialite
*Stalks victim and gathers information
* Obtains victims identity and secures it using todays services. Not allowing the person to regain identity or be warned.

stop.

this film will cover both sides of the crime. Victim impact i todays economy and fruitfullness of hacker who stole it.

please contact Mike at 313-64 xxxx for info:

need:

Screenwriter
Director
Cast

this film should be profitable with valuable life lessons in today's technological world. all profits and credits will be shared equally. can screen test on you tube
  • Location: Detroit
  • Compensation: no pay

Of course you can lose a location at the last minute. And when you do, you RESCHEDULE the shoot. Once you've secured a new location and fully scouted it, then you can set a new schedule. You don't just grab whatever place you can find at the last minute and shoot anyway.

The best are the troma guys. Donate $50, executive producer on imdb. You can't even get mad at them, it's so hilarious. God bless lloyd kaufman.

I saw this one and saved it also. What a scream.

It's hilarious, but at the same time sad/pitiful. Unfortunately I know a lot of "filmmakers" who have this kind of attitude towards their productions. Some of whom even manage to get budgets up to ~$100,000.
