What age?

So I'm wondering what age do you think it's okay for a kid to get into the music/acting game.

My friend's daughter is 11. She has pretty kick-ass singing voice, is cute and is interested in pursuing something with it. My friends and I are all actors, musicians, photographers -- artists of some kind or another, and since one of my friends has a professional recording studio, we were thinking about all coming together to write songs and do music videos and stuff for her (all age appropriate, of course). She's also going to start acting in a short film I'm doing.

I think getting into the biz at a younger age for a girl is probably easier than a boy (in terms of transitioning), but what's the verdict on age stuff overall for you guys? Would you let your daughter start acting in film and laying down tracks at 11 so long as it was all with friends and family?

I don't know anything about acting but music doesn't have an age limit. 11 years old to play in a band is fine. Any age is fine really.
I imagine the gigs, if they do any, would be school gigs, like dances and those auditorium get togethers.
Practicing in one of the parents basements or garages is what most kids do. Recording is okay anytime. You can learn a great deal from being in any kind of a studio.
You wouldn't want to spend alot of money though. You might be able to get them into a small basement studio for $25/hr or something.

I was in a band at 13 but we had an adult manager of sorts. We played old folks homes, wedding receptions, schools and a bunch of outdoor summer fest gigs all of which we were paid which was cool.
I also knew a local guy who was on the CBS label at the time and had a little basement studio as well so we got to try a few things out in there and just hang out sometimes and try some little ideas on tape.

I'd encourage it. Use common sense ofcourse if your uncomfortable or unsure about something.

Now, if your daughter were to end up in a working band, like those playing professionally in bars and festivals then your starting to get into something else.
But I wouldn't worry about that until she finds herself in that position. Right now it's probably more of a fun hobby thing. Young musicians are usually a pretty decent bunch of people so she'll probably get in far less trouble, if any, playing in a rock band than she would hanging out wherever it is they hang out nowadays.

That's my 2cents.

As long as she is having fun with it and isn't being forced into it, let her see if she likes it.

Just don't be a Stage Dad.

Cool. And again, it's my friend's kid, not mine. Cats are good enough for me.

I wonder if my cats want to act...

Hmm...

just dont let her get involved with the "Friday" people! seriously though, it sounds like you have a good cadre of creative people who can nurture her talents. let it evolve organically and don't push her.
