Any hardware store sells fabric mesh screen by the roll for redoing screen doors. It comes in silver and black. I use this to make scrims for cutting light a bit.
I got a wall-washing kit at Home Depot for $40 Canadian (that's about five bucks US - well, used to be...) - the kind you can attach a hose to one end, and water runs through a telescopic handle to a brush. Expensive as far as brushes go, but...
...take the brush off the handle, move over to the hardware section, get a double-threaded pin (3/8" on one end, wood screw on the other) plus a 3/8" nut, drive the pin into the 'brush' end of the handle, and you have an instant boom pole. Extends to 12 feet. The microphone holder that comes with the Sennheiser mic fits the 3/8" screw.
Also works great on wifes: Honey, I just saved you 400 bucks! Can I get another microphone?
As an added bonus, you can use the brush to wash ketchup off the floor after you've filmed your Zombiefest featurette.
